Gurugram RTO at a glance

Gurugram RTO at a glance

Gurugram district runs on several HR codes rather than one: The official district directory names five sub-divisions, and directories list a separate HR code for most of them, with HR-26 for the Gurugram sub-division itself, so a car from Sohna and a car from Sector 14 can carry different numbers.

How to read a Gurugram (HR-26) number plate

How to read a Gurugram (HR-26) number plate

In the plate HR 26 AB 1234, HR stands for Haryana, 26 is the code directories list for the Gurugram registering office, AB is the letter series, and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Number plate HR 26 AB 1234 labelled: HR is the state code for Haryana, 26 is the Gurugram RTO code, AB is the series and 1234 is the four-digit number

Worth knowing: A Gurgaon-era HR-26 car did not change its number when the city took the name Gurugram, and moving the car to Rohtak or Panchkula later keeps it as well, since an HR-26 plate changes only if the car is re-registered outside Haryana or its registration details are changed.

Bought new in Gurugram since 1 April 2019? Then your car left the showroom with its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) already fitted.

Worth knowing: For an older HR-26, HR-72 or HR-98 car, book the installation on the booking portal named on the Haryana Transport Department website and check the date shown for HR vehicles there. What the plate must show is explained on our Haryana RTO guide.

What directories list for each office; confirm the address before you go

No official Haryana address list for these registering offices is available, so the details below come from directories and are shown as listed; the address on your RC decides which office you deal with. No official source gives the Gurugram counter hours, so confirm them with the office before you set off.

Sohna office for South Gurugram, HR-72

One directory places the South Gurugram office in the Old Judicial Complex at Anaj Mandi, Sohna, pincode 122103. The same directory files it under HR-55, while the other sources list Sohna as HR-72, so check which code the office issues.

Badshahpur office, HR-98

Badshahpur is one of the five sub-divisions on the district directory, and directories list HR-98 for its office in Badshahpur (122101). One directory names southern New Gurgaon and Wazirabad among its areas, which no official source confirms.

Pataudi office and the commercial code, HR-76 and HR-55

HR-76 is listed for Pataudi and Farrukhnagar, a separate sub-division of the district rather than a Gurugram city office. HR-55 is listed for transport vehicles such as taxis and goods carriers, so a private car should not be given it.

Start from your sub-division. The district directory lists five, and directories link a registering office to each; Manesar is the exception, as no code for it could be confirmed. There is no official area list for these offices, so the address printed on your RC picks the office.

Worth knowing: Shifting from Sohna to central Gurugram keeps your HR-72 number. Only the RC address needs changing, and your insurer has to be informed of it as well.

Road tax in Gurugram

Road tax in Gurugram

Paid once, at the Haryana rate, whichever Gurugram office registers the car

Gurugram owners pay Haryana road tax once, when the car is first registered in the state, as a share of its cost. For a car for personal use the rate is 5%, 8% or 10% by price, and it is the same whoever owns it, a person or a company.

For example: A ₹5 lakh hatchback registered in Gurugram falls in the lowest band, so the one-time tax is 5% of ₹5 lakh, or ₹25,000.

  • Electric cars

A July 2026 notification exempts a new electric car bought in Haryana up to ₹30 lakh in full, and halves the tax above that

  • Company cars

Haryana has no separate company rate, so a car on a firm’s name pays the same band

  • Cars from Delhi

Haryana tax is due 30 days after a DL car starts being kept in Gurugram, cut 7% per year of Delhi tax paid, at most 56%

RTO fees and charges in Gurugram

RTO fees and charges in Gurugram

Whether the car is registered at HR-26, HR-72 or HR-98, the RTO fees are the national ones, so Sohna charges what Gurugram does, and what a Delhi office charges too. They are paid on Vahan, and a dealer folds them into the price of a new car.

For example: A new Gurugram car on a bank loan costs ₹2,300 in RTO fees, which is ₹600 to register, ₹200 for the smart card and ₹1,500 to record the loan, all before the road tax.

Keeping a Gurugram car past 15 years means a ₹5,000 renewal, and past 20 years ₹10,000. Miss the renewal date and the office adds ₹500 a month on a car, or ₹300 on a motorcycle, until the renewal goes through.

The dealer files on Vahan, and the office for your sub-division gives the number

Buy a car from a Gurugram showroom and the dealer files the registration on Vahan to the office for the address on your papers. A Badshahpur address goes to the office listed for HR-98, not to HR-26.

  1. 1

    Insure the car

A policy in your name has to exist before any HR number can be issued

  2. 2

    Dealer files on Vahan

  3. 3

    Pay tax and fees

The showroom adds Haryana tax and the RTO fee to your on-road bill

  4. 4

The office for your sub-division approves it and allots the HR number

Transferring car ownership in Gurugram

Transferring car ownership in Gurugram

Selling a car with a Gurugram number goes through Vahan and the office that holds its record. Form 29 from the seller tells the office of the sale, Form 30 carries both signatures, and a Gurugram transfer costs ₹300 for a car or ₹150 for a motorcycle.

The buyer then has 14 days to have the policy moved into their name.

Clearing hypothecation from a Gurugram RC

When the loan is paid off, upload Form 35 with the lender’s NOC on Vahan, and the hypothecation is removed at no charge, with the paperwork listed on our Haryana RTO guide.

Duplicate RC and RC status check in Gurugram

If the RC of an HR-26 or HR-98 car goes missing, the owner files Form 26 for a duplicate RC and pays the amount shown in the fees table. To see whether an HR record is active and up to date, run the Kiwi Insurance RC status check.

Bring a car to Gurugram on Delhi or other outside plates and two clocks start. Haryana road tax falls due within 30 days of it being kept in the state, and the switch to an HR number is due once it has been kept here for more than 12 months.

Leaving Haryana instead? Ask the Gurugram office for the NOC on Form 28, then register the car in the new state.

BH series registration in Gurugram

BH series registration in Gurugram

A Gurugram buyer who expects transfers to other states can ask for a Bharat series (BH) number in place of an HR one, and skip re-registration after the next move.

A Gurugram resident in a private job applies with Form 60, which the employer signs to show it has offices in 4 or more states or union territories. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.

BH tax is paid every 2 years; eligibility is on our Haryana RTO guide.
