Spelt Sonipat or Sonepat, the district’s main registering office is listed under HR-10, with HR-69 for commercial vehicles. Three of its towns, Gohana, Ganaur and Kharkhoda, are listed with codes of their own, so not every Sonipat district car shows HR-10.
Split HR 10 AB 1234 into its parts and the Sonipat link is the 10. HR names Haryana, 10 is the listed code of the Sonipat office, AB is the series of letters, and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: If an HR-10 car is sold to someone in Karnal, or its owner moves to Gohana, the plate still shows 10, as a Sonipat number changes only if the car is re-registered outside Haryana or its registration details are changed.
From 1 April 2019, every new car registered at Sonipat has come with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) put on by the dealer, so those owners need not apply.
Worth knowing: Sonipat district cars registered before that date get the plate installed after booking on the booking portal named on the Haryana Transport Department website, where the date for HR vehicles is published. The plate’s features are described on our Haryana RTO guide.
HR-10 and HR-69 for Sonipat, and three more listed for towns in the same district
Sonipat district has five codes on the lists, not one: HR-10 is the Sonipat office and HR-69 the commercial code, while HR-11, HR-42 and HR-79 belong to the Gohana, Ganaur and Kharkhoda sub-divisions.
The HR-10 and HR-69 offices as directories list them, and the town offices
Directories place both the HR-10 office and the HR-69 commercial office in the Mini Secretariat at Sonepat, pincode 131001. Haryana offers no official address list to compare it with, so treat it as a directory listing and confirm it with the office or on the Haryana Transport Department website. The Sonipat office hours could not be confirmed from an official source, so check the timings with the HR-10 office ahead of your visit.
Directories list HR-69 for Sonipat’s commercial vehicles at the same Mini Secretariat address. It is the code for taxis, goods vehicles and buses, so a family car should be on HR-10 or a town code.
Gohana (HR-11), Ganaur (HR-42) and Kharkhoda (HR-79) are listed as sub-division offices within Sonipat district. One directory gives Kharkhoda the pincode 131402, but no street address is given for any of the three.

An RC address in Sonipat itself points to HR-10. Addresses in the Gohana, Ganaur or Kharkhoda sub-divisions may be registered at those offices instead, which is why two neighbours in the same district can have different codes. As no official list shows which villages each Sonipat office covers, the RC address alone points you to one.
To see which office an existing number belongs to, type it, for example HR10AB1234, into the finder at the top of this page.
Worth knowing: A Ganaur car keeps HR-42 when its owner moves into Sonipat. The RC needs the new address, and the insurer should be informed of it.
The district’s own website names its neighbours: Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, and the Haryana districts of Rohtak, Jind and Panipat. Each registers under its own codes, so a Panipat car is HR-06, not HR-10.

Haryana’s one-time tax, charged the same way at HR-10 and the town offices
Sonipat collects Haryana road tax once, at first registration, as a percentage of the car’s price. The bands are the state’s, with 5% for a car for personal use up to the first band, and there is no higher rate when a company is the owner.
For example: A family registering a ₹5 lakh car at HR-10 pays 5% of that price as road tax, ₹25,000 in all, and does not pay it again while the car stays in Haryana.
A July 2026 Haryana notification removes road tax on a new electric car up to ₹30 lakh, with a 50% rebate above that
Sonipat applies the same bands to a car bought in a company’s name
A DL car pays Haryana tax inside a month of staying here, less 7% per year of tax already paid
Vahan calculates it before you pay; our Haryana RTO guide has the background
Sonipat charges the national RTO fees, so HR-10, Gohana, Ganaur and Kharkhoda all ask the same amount for the same service, and so would a Delhi office. Payment is made on Vahan, and the dealer adds it to a new car’s bill.
For example: A car bought new on a loan in Sonipat pays the office ₹600 to register, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to note the loan, so ₹2,300 before the road tax is added.
Older Sonipat cars renew for ₹5,000 at 15 years and ₹10,000 after 20. A renewal left overdue costs ₹500 more each month on a car and ₹300 more on a motorcycle.
Vahan sends the file to HR-10 or to the town office for your address
When you buy a new car in Sonipat, the dealer registers it on Vahan with the office for the address you give. For a Sonipat address that is HR-10, while a buyer from Gohana or Kharkhoda may get that town’s code.
Insurance has to be bought before Sonipat will accept the registration
The dealer uploads your papers, and your address picks the office
Haryana road tax and the RTO fee are settled with the car’s price
HR-10 or the town office approves and issues the registration
With the HSRP on the car, Sonipat issues the RC
An HR-10 car is sold by applying on Vahan to the Sonipat office, with Form 29 from the seller and Form 30 signed by seller and buyer. Sonipat charges ₹300 to transfer a car and ₹150 for a motorcycle.
After that, the new owner has a window of 14 days to shift the policy to their name.
Once the bank confirms the loan is closed, its NOC goes on Vahan with Form 35 and the loan entry is deleted from the RC free of charge, as our Haryana RTO guide explains.
Sonipat owners begin almost every task online. The Vahan portal covers the vehicle and the Sarathi portal the driving licence, and the application goes to HR-10 or to the town office for your address.
For a lost or damaged Sonipat RC, the owner applies on Form 26 for a duplicate RC, paying the fee in the fees table. The current state of any HR-10 record can be looked up with the Kiwi Insurance RC status check.
Sonipat licence work, from the learner’s test to renewals, is applied for on Sarathi, where the test slot is also booked, and each service has its own note on our Haryana RTO guide.
Look up a Sonipat number at echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in mParivahan, where pending challans can be paid online.
Fines for helmets, seat belts, speeding and every other offence are listed on our Haryana RTO guide.
An HR car only needs a new address; a Delhi car owes Haryana tax inside 30 days
Sonipat borders Delhi, and a car brought in on DL or other outside plates owes Haryana road tax within 30 days of being kept in the state. It must take an HR number once it has been kept here for more than 12 months, while a car already on HR plates needs only an address change.
Ask for it on Form 28 before driving to Sonipat
Paid on the current price, lowered by 7% for each year of tax paid, at most by 56%
After more than 12 months here, re-register at HR-10 or your town office
Leaving Haryana with a Sonipat car works the other way: The HR-10 office issues the NOC on Form 28, and the car is then registered in the new state.
Worth knowing: A changed address on the RC, and any new number after it, are both points at which to inform your insurer. For the document list, see our Haryana RTO guide.
A Sonipat buyer whose job involves transfers across states can choose a Bharat series (BH) number at purchase rather than HR-10, so the car is not re-registered in each new state.
A private sector employee qualifies with Form 60, which the employer completes to show it has offices in 4 or more states or union territories. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
Paying the BH tax every 2 years, and the other rules, are explained on our Haryana RTO guide.

Sonipat applications almost all go through the Vahan portal or the Sarathi portal, so keep a paper form for when the office specifically asks.
Holders of a Sonipat licence who will drive outside India request their permit on it

Sonipat is Zone B for Own Damage pricing, as the tariff zone follows the office that registered the car and no Haryana city is on the Zone A list. Next door, New Delhi is Zone A, so an HR-10 car usually pays less for Own Damage than a DL one, while Third-Party premiums are set nationally.
HR-10, HR-69 and the Gohana, Ganaur and Kharkhoda codes are all Zone B, lower for Own Damage than Zone A Delhi
Zone A still applies to a Delhi car kept in Sonipat, as its Delhi office rates it until it is re-registered here
The Third-Party premium goes by engine size, whatever the Sonipat address
Choose a plan with cashless garages within easy reach of your Sonipat home
A new car gets its HR-10 registration only after the insurance is in place. If an HR-10 car is sold, the RC changes hands first and the buyer then has 14 days to transfer the policy, and after any change to the RC address or number, inform your insurer to keep the two in line.
Third-Party cover is a legal must for every Sonipat car and bike, at registration and on any road in India Finished with the Sonipat office? Then check the policy and the RC show the same owner. One card opens Kiwi Insurance car plans and the other its bike plans.

Look for HR-10 on a Sonipat car, as that is the code directories give its registering office, while HR-69 appears on the district’s commercial vehicles.
