Akola RTO at a glance

Akola RTO at a glance

MH-30 is the code of the Akola office, and that office now appears in the Transport Department’s structure as a full Regional Transport Office, reported to have been upgraded from a Deputy RTO in 2023. Three Deputy RTOs, Washim, Buldhana and Khamgaon, report to it.

How to read an Akola (MH-30) number plate

How to read an Akola (MH-30) number plate

Split MH 30 AB 1234 into four and the plate explains itself. MH marks Maharashtra and 30 marks the Akola office; AB is the letter series that office was issuing, and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Number plate MH 30 AB 1234 labelled: MH is the state code for Maharashtra, 30 is the Akola RTO code, AB is the series and 1234 is the four-digit number

Worth knowing: An MH-30 car driven to a new home in Washim or Nagpur still shows 30, since the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Maharashtra or its registration details are changed. A news report in April 2026 said the Akola office had opened the CD letters for two-wheelers, with applications taken for preferred numbers.

If your Akola car was registered on or after 1 April 2019, its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) was fitted at delivery, and the state does not ask you to apply for another.

Owners of earlier MH-30 cars book the installation on the booking portal named on the Maharashtra transport department website, which shows the date for MH vehicles too. At a fitment centre there is no fitment charge on top; a home visit is charged extra. What the plate must carry is explained on our Maharashtra RTO guide.

The Transport Department’s list of regional offices gives the Akola address as Municipal Corporation School No. 21, Railway Station Chowk, Akola 444001. Its newer address list names a different site, so check where the office is working before you go. Check the timings with the MH-30 office before you set out, as they could not be confirmed from an official source.

Akola district has seven tehsils, Akola, Balapur, Patur, Barshitakli, Murtizapur, Akot and Telhara, and the Transport Department lists no other office inside the district, so an RC address in any of them points to MH-30. For Washim and Buldhana addresses, the district’s own office applies.

Worth knowing: A move from Akot to Akola city, or out to another Maharashtra district, keeps the registration number unchanged. Only the RC address needs updating, and your insurer needs to be informed.

The showroom files on Vahan and the Akola office allots an MH-30 number

An Akola showroom files your new car on Vahan, and MH-30 approves it for an address in any of the seven tehsils. A buyer from Washim gets an MH-37 number even when the car comes from an Akola dealer.

  1. 1

    Get insured first

A valid policy, from the insurer you pick, is needed before the car is registered

  2. 2

  3. 3

Akola approves the registration and gives the car its number

  5. 5

    Fit the plate

The High Security Registration Plate goes on and the RC follows

  • Tehsil address, Akola office

From Telhara to Murtizapur, an Akola district address leads to MH-30

  • Policy before number

Insurance comes first, at the Zone B rate for an Akola car

  • Same for two-wheelers

Scooters and motorcycles are registered the same way at MH-30

Transferring car ownership in Akola

Selling an Akola-registered car is handled on Vahan or at MH-30 itself. Form 29 is the seller’s notice of sale, Form 30 is signed by both sides, and the office collects ₹300 for a car, ₹150 for a motorcycle.

A window of 14 days then opens for the buyer to put the insurance in their own name.

Removing a loan (hypothecation) from an Akola RC

Once the bank is repaid, its No Objection Certificate (NOC) and Form 35 go on Vahan, and the loan comes off the RC free. Our Maharashtra RTO guide covers the documents.

Moving your car to Akola

A Maharashtra car keeps its number; a car from another state gets MH-30 in time

Moving to Akola from Amravati, Pune or any Maharashtra city, the car keeps its MH number and you update the address. Moving with a car from another state, it can stay on its old plate for 12 months in Maharashtra and then needs an MH number.

Worth knowing: Each change on the RC, first the address and later any new number, means you should inform your insurer. Document lists are on our Maharashtra RTO guide.

BH series registration in Akola

BH series registration in Akola

An Akola buyer whose job moves across state lines can ask the dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number in place of MH-30, and then needs no new registration after a posting outside Maharashtra.

For private sector staff, Form 60 is the key document, signed by an employer with offices in 4 or more states or union territories. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.

Zone B sets the Own Damage rate for an MH-30 car, as the zone comes from the registering office and Akola is not on the tariff’s Zone A list, which in Maharashtra names Mumbai and Pune. Own Damage cover therefore usually costs less than for a car from those cities, while the Third-Party premium is fixed nationally.

  • MH-30 is Zone B

    MH-30 is Zone B

Every car registered at the Akola office is rated Zone B, so its Own Damage part is usually cheaper than in Mumbai or Pune

How insurance links to the Akola RTO

The Akola office needs a valid policy before it registers a new car. When an MH-30 car is sold, its RC is moved to the buyer at Akola before anything else, and the buyer has 14 days after that to shift the policy. If the RC address or number changes, inform your insurer so the two match.
