The city was renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023, but its cars still get MH-20. The Maharashtra transport department now lists the office under both names, so whichever one you see on a form or a website, it points to the same Regional Transport Office (RTO) near the railway station.
Take a plate such as MH 20 AB 1234 in four parts. From the left, MH is the Maharashtra state code and 20 marks the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar office, while the letters AB are the series and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: The new city name brought no new code, and the 2026 office list still gives MH-20 for the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar office. Your MH-20 stays on the car when you move to Paithan, Pune or anywhere else in Maharashtra, and the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Maharashtra or its registration details are changed.
Since 1 April 2019 every new car sold in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has left the dealer with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) on it, and the state transport department says those owners need not apply again.
For an older MH-20 or MH-57 car, book the installation on the booking portal named on the Maharashtra transport department website, where the office still appears as Aurangabad. Fitting at a centre adds no fitment charge, while fitting at home costs extra. The rest of the plate rules are on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
The city code, the second code in the district and the codes run from the city office
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district registers vehicles at two offices. MH-20 is the Regional Transport Office in the city, and MH-57 is a Deputy RTO at Vaijapur in the same district, under the city office.
The city office also oversees the Deputy RTOs at Jalna (MH-21) and Beed (MH-23), but those districts keep codes of their own. Until 1 May 1981 Jalna belonged to Aurangabad district, and since then it has been a district with a code of its own.
Dharashiv, the former Osmanabad, was renamed in 2023 together with Aurangabad, and the two often appear side by side in lists of new names. Its MH-25 office reports to Latur, not to the MH-20 office.
The MH-20 office for the city and the MH-57 office at Vaijapur
Almost every task for a car registered in the city, from a new number to a transfer or a licence test, goes to one office near the railway station. The department’s Regional Offices page still names it Aurangabad, while its 2026 office list uses Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
This is a full Regional Transport Office, and the department’s organisation chart places three Deputy RTOs under it, at Jalna, Beed and Vaijapur. Unlike Latur or Nanded, it runs no border check post.
Vaijapur has its own Deputy RTO, listed with the code MH-57 in the department’s 2026 office list, and news reports say the state ordered it on 14 October 2024. It is an office for the Vaijapur side of the district, not a second office for city addresses.
Worth knowing: Read the code on your Registration Certificate (RC) before you travel. An MH-57 car has its file at Vaijapur, so a trip to Railway Station Road may not help, and any driving test slot is booked on Sarathi first.

The department publishes no area list for MH-20 or MH-57, so the table goes taluka by taluka, with the split as one source gives it. The address on your RC picks the office, not the showroom that sold the car.
Already have a number? Type it, for example MH20AB1234, into the finder at the top of this page, and it names the office that registered the car.
Worth knowing: Moving from Sillod into the city, or from the city to Nashik, leaves the MH-20 number untouched. Put the new address on the RC first, and then inform your insurer about the move.
Jalna, Jalgaon and Nashik districts border Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, and each registers its own cars. Jalna has the closest tie, as it was carved out of this district in 1981 and its Deputy RTO still reports to the MH-20 office.

The Maharashtra one-time tax, the same at MH-20 and MH-57
Road tax on a car registered in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is the Maharashtra rate, paid once when the car gets its first number. The fuel and the price of the car set the percentage, and Vaijapur charges exactly what the city office does.
For example: An individual who buys a ₹6 lakh petrol car at a city showroom pays 11%, or ₹66,000. Expect a road safety cess as well, levied on the tax and reported as 2% of it; Vahan gives the final amount.
When a firm rather than a person owns a petrol or diesel car, the tax jumps to 20%
Register an electric car between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2030 and the state electric vehicle (EV) policy waives its road tax in full
Reported in force from 1 July 2025, they raised CNG and LPG rates by 1% and the maximum tax from ₹20 lakhs to ₹30 lakhs
A car re-registered here from another state pays by its age, so check the amount on Vahan. For two-wheeler rates, see our Maharashtra RTO guide
RTO fees are national, so the MH-20 office charges exactly what the Jalna office charges under MH-21. Payment goes through the Vahan portal, and a new car’s fees are already in the dealer’s on-road price.
For example: Buy a car on a loan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the MH-20 office takes ₹2,300 before road tax: ₹600 to register it, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to record the loan.
Keep an MH-20 car past 15 years and renewing its registration costs ₹5,000, or ₹10,000 once it is over 20. Each month that a renewal runs past its due date costs a further ₹500 for a car, against ₹300 for a motorcycle.
None of this includes the number plate, a state service charge or the Maharashtra road tax, which are paid separately.
Whether the car leaves with MH-20 or MH-57 rests on where you live
When you buy a new car in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the dealer applies for the number on Vahan, and the office for your home address approves it. A Paithan buyer gets MH-20 and, going by one source, a Gangapur buyer gets MH-57, even if both shop at the same showroom.
Arrange insurance before registration, from any insurer you pick; the dealer cannot insist on one
The dealer files on Vahan with your address, which sends the file to MH-20 or MH-57
The Maharashtra road tax and the RTO fee show as separate lines on the on-road invoice
Once the office for your area clears the file, it allots the MH number
With the High Security Registration Plate on the car, the RC is printed and sent out
A car bought in the city for a Vaijapur address goes to the MH-57 office
Registration needs valid cover, and Zone B keeps the Own Damage part lower than in Pune
Scooters and bikes follow the same rule, with the owner’s address picking the code
Sell a used car in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the transfer is handled on Vahan by the office on its RC, MH-20 in the city or MH-57 at Vaijapur. Form 29 comes from the seller, Form 30 carries both signatures, and the transfer fee is ₹300 for a car (₹150 for a motorcycle).
The buyer then gets 14 days from the sale to move the policy across into their name.
After the last instalment, upload the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) with Form 35 on Vahan, and the RC is reissued without the loan at no fee. Each document is listed on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
Vehicle work for an MH-20 car starts on the Vahan portal and licence work on the Sarathi portal, and each application reaches the office for your RC address. Maharashtra holds the learner licence test online with Aadhaar authentication, so that step needs no visit to Railway Station Road.
A lost, stolen or damaged RC is replaced on Form 26 through the office that issued it, with the fee shown in the fees table. To see where any MH registration stands, use the Kiwi Insurance RC status check.
Book the licence step on Sarathi, then sit the driving test at the office for your address, in the city or at Vaijapur. Every other online service appears on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
For an MH-20 or MH-57 car, enter the number on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in mParivahan to view and pay any challan, which states the amount for each offence.
The longer list of offences and amounts is on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
A plate from another state means more paperwork than an MH plate
A car from Pune or Nagpur needs only a new address on its RC after a move to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, as any MH number is valid here. Bring one from another state, though, and after more than 12 months in Maharashtra it has to be re-registered with an MH number.
Before you leave, apply on Form 28 to the RTO that registered the car
After 12 months in Maharashtra, apply at MH-20, or at MH-57 for a Vaijapur address
Vahan shows the tax for the car’s age before you pay it
Pass on the new MH number and address once the new RC is issued
For owners leaving Maharashtra with an MH-20 or MH-57 car, the steps simply run the other way. Ask the office on your RC for the NOC on Form 28 before you go, then register the car in the new state.
Worth knowing: On the day the new RC is issued, inform your insurer of the number and address printed on it, and use our Maharashtra RTO guide for the form behind each step.
If a transfer out of Maharashtra is likely, ask the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number in place of MH-20. A later posting to Hyderabad or Delhi then takes the car along with no No Objection Certificate (NOC) or new MH number.
Someone in a private job qualifies through Form 60, which the employer signs if it has offices in 4 or more states or union territories. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
Our Maharashtra RTO guide covers eligibility and the 2-year tax.

Insurers set the Own Damage premium by the zone of the registering office, and MH-20 and MH-57 cars both fall in Zone B. Mumbai and Pune are the Zone A cities in Maharashtra, so the same car registered in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar usually costs less to insure for damage. The Third-Party part, by contrast, is priced nationally and does not move with the plate.
Zone B covers MH-20 and MH-57 cars, which usually means a lower Own Damage premium than for a car registered in Pune
Prices for Third-Party cover come from a national table by engine size, so plans differ only on Own Damage and optional covers
Move here with a car registered in Pune and it stays in Zone A, as the zone goes with the office that registered it
Check which cashless partner garages are near your home and work before you choose a plan
The MH-20 or MH-57 office registers a new car only once it is insured
Buy a registered car and you have 14 days to move its policy into your name
After re-registration from another state, inform your insurer of the MH number
A move within Maharashtra keeps the number, but inform your insurer of the address
Both Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar offices check for Third-Party cover with the registration papers, and no vehicle in India may be driven without it Once the RTO side is done, put the policy in your own name. The two cards lead to Kiwi Insurance plans, one for cars and one for two-wheelers.

Yes. It is one Regional Transport Office with one code, MH-20. The city became Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023, and the transport department now uses both names for the office near the railway station.
