Chandrapur vehicles carry MH-34, issued by the office behind the LIC Building in Jal Nagar Ward. The Transport Department’s current structure shows it as a full Regional Transport Office in charge of the Gadchiroli Deputy RTO, a change news reports date to 2023.
Break MH 34 AB 1234 down from the left. The opening MH means a Maharashtra registration, 34 names the Chandrapur office, AB gives the letter series and 1234 is the four-digit number unique to the car.

Worth knowing: Gadchiroli was part of Chandrapur district until 1982 and now has its own code, MH-33. For any one car, though, 34 stays on the plate through every sale or move in Maharashtra: The code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Maharashtra or its registration details are changed.
Since 1 April 2019, every new Chandrapur car has left the dealer with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) in place, and the Maharashtra transport department does not require those owners to reapply.
An MH-34 car from before that date needs the plate installed: Book it on the booking portal named on the Maharashtra transport department website, where the deadline for MH vehicles is also given. There is no fitment charge at a fitment centre, though home fitment costs extra. Our Maharashtra RTO guide describes the plate.
MH-34 for Chandrapur, and the codes of the districts around it
Chandrapur district uses one code, MH-34. The second table shows the codes next door, starting with MH-33, which belongs to Gadchiroli, the district carved out of Chandrapur in 1982.
The MH-34 office, its check post and the Gadchiroli office under it
All registrations, licences and transfers for a Chandrapur district address are handled at MH-34, behind the LIC Building in Jal Nagar Ward. Both department address lists agree on this site. Hours for the Jal Nagar office could not be confirmed from an official source, so confirm them with the office before your trip.
Unlike some offices in the region, this one has the same site on both department lists, give or take the spelling of Jal Nagar. One older department page still calls the office a Deputy RTO, but its current structure shows a Regional Transport Officer in charge.
Gadchiroli district was carved out of Chandrapur on 26 August 1982. It has its own Deputy RTO on MIDC Road near Gondwana University, registering under MH-33, and that office reports to Chandrapur.

With no other office listed in Chandrapur district, an RC address anywhere in the district goes to MH-34. Your Registration Certificate (RC) address is what counts, not the town where you bought the car.
Unsure which office registered a car? Key in its number, such as MH34AB1234, in the finder at the top of this page.
Worth knowing: When you move within the district, or anywhere else in Maharashtra, an MH-34 number is never reissued. The RC address is updated, and you inform your insurer of the new one.
Chandrapur shares borders with Nagpur, Bhandara and Wardha to the north, Yavatmal to the west and Gadchiroli to the east, with Telangana beyond its southern edge. Every one of these districts has its own office and code.

Chandrapur pays the Maharashtra one-time tax at the MH-34 office
There is no separate Chandrapur rate: The MH-34 office collects Maharashtra road tax, once, at first registration. A car owned by an individual is taxed on its price, at a rate that depends on the fuel.
For example: Register a ₹6 lakh petrol car at MH-34 and the tax at 11% is ₹66,000, before the road safety cess. Were a company the owner, the petrol rate would be 20%.
Electric vehicles registered from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2030 pay none, under the EV policy order of 23 May 2025
A road safety cess comes on top, reported at 2% of the tax; confirm the amount on Vahan
Changes reported to apply from 1 July 2025 lifted the cost limit for taxing a car from ₹20 lakhs to ₹30 lakhs
The portal works out the tax for your model; our Maharashtra RTO guide has the bands
Chandrapur charges the national RTO fees, so the amount at MH-34 is no different from the Gadchiroli office or a Nagpur one. Fees are paid on the Vahan portal, and on a new car they are part of the dealer’s on-road price.
For example: A financed new car registered in Chandrapur pays ₹2,300 to the RTO before road tax, which is ₹600 for registration, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 for the loan entry.
Chandrapur cars that reach 15 renew for ₹5,000, and those over 20 for ₹10,000. A renewal left overdue grows by ₹500 each month for a car, ₹300 for a motorcycle.
The HSRP plate, road tax and state service charges are billed separately from this table.
The dealer applies on Vahan, and MH-34 registers the car for a district address
In Chandrapur the dealer submits the registration on Vahan, and the MH-34 office approves it when the buyer’s address is in the district. A Gadchiroli resident buying from a Chandrapur showroom is registered under MH-33, as the address decides.
The policy, from an insurer you choose, must start before registration
The dealer uploads your address proof, which routes the file to MH-34
Road tax and the RTO fee are included and itemised on the invoice
The Jal Nagar office approves the file and allots an MH-34 number
Your High Security Registration Plate is fitted and the RC issued
Where you live, not where you buy, decides between MH-34 and MH-33
A Chandrapur car needs a policy before its number, rated Zone B
Two-wheelers are registered at MH-34 by the same steps
A second-hand MH-34 car changes hands on Vahan or at the Jal Nagar office. The seller completes Form 29, seller and buyer together complete Form 30, and the fee comes to ₹300 for a car or ₹150 for a motorcycle.
From the date of transfer, the buyer has 14 days to have the policy moved across.
When the lender has been paid in full, submit Form 35 and its No Objection Certificate (NOC) on Vahan, and the RC is reissued without the loan at no cost. Check the supporting papers against our Maharashtra RTO guide before you upload them.
Most MH-34 services begin on the Vahan portal, for the vehicle, or the Sarathi portal, for the licence, and are then handled by the Chandrapur office. Maharashtra has made the learner licence test an online one, with Aadhaar authentication.
Replace a missing or spoilt RC through Form 26 at MH-34, paying the fee in the fees table. The Kiwi Insurance RC status check gives the status of a Chandrapur registration.
Driving tests are booked on Sarathi and taken at the Chandrapur office. Every other online option is described on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
Challans on an MH-34 car can be checked and settled on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in the mParivahan app; each challan shows what is owed for the offence.
A wider list of fines is kept on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
An MH car needs only a new address; a car from another state needs an MH-34 number in time
Bringing an MH-registered car to Chandrapur from Nagpur or anywhere in the state, you update only the RC address. A car from Telangana or any other state can be kept in Maharashtra for 12 months before it has to be re-registered with an MH number.
Ask the registering office for a No Objection Certificate on Form 28
Apply at Jal Nagar Ward for an MH number within the 12 months
Maharashtra tax depends on how old the car is; check it on Vahan
If you are leaving Maharashtra, the same steps apply in reverse: Ask MH-34 for the No Objection Certificate (NOC) on Form 28, which costs nothing, before the car is registered in the new state.
Worth knowing: A new address and a new number are two separate reasons to inform your insurer. Which documents each change needs is covered on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
If your work involves postings across states, you can ask the Chandrapur dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number instead of MH-34, and avoid re-registering the car when you are moved out of Maharashtra.
Private employers qualify when they have offices in 4 or more states or union territories, and they confirm it on Form 60 for the employee. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
Eligibility rules and the tax every 2 years are detailed on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
The official form PDFs for work at MH-34, one card per task
These days the Vahan portal or the Sarathi portal takes most of these. A paper copy matters only if the Chandrapur office asks you to bring one in.

For an MH-34 car the Own Damage premium is worked out at the Zone B rate, as the zone depends on the registering office and Chandrapur is not on the tariff’s Zone A list. That usually means less to pay than for a Mumbai or Pune registration; the Third-Party premium is the same everywhere.
MH-34 cars fall in Zone B for Own Damage, which usually makes cover cheaper than for the Zone A cities
The national Third-Party price depends on engine size, so a Chandrapur quote varies only on Own Damage and extras
MH-33 and the Nagpur codes are also outside the Zone A list, so moving between them does not change the zone
Cashless repairs depend on a partner garage nearby, so look for one around your part of Chandrapur
No new car is registered at MH-34 without a valid policy. When a car is sold, the RC is transferred and the buyer then moves the policy within 14 days. If the RC address or number is changed, inform your insurer so the records line up.
MH-34 registers no car or bike without Third-Party cover, which every vehicle in India must have by law Once the Chandrapur office has done its part, check that the insurance is in your name too. Use the cards below to see Kiwi Insurance car and bike plans.

MH-34. Every vehicle registered for a Chandrapur district address carries it, as the district’s office registers under that code.
