Quick facts

Kalyan RTO at a glance

Kalyan has its own code, MH-05, but its office is a Deputy Regional Transport Office (RTO) that reports to Thane RTO. It is the only office the transport department lists in the Kalyan area, and none of Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur or Dombivli has an office on its lists.

How to read a Kalyan number plate

How to read a Kalyan number plate

In MH 05 AB 1234, the letters MH stand for Maharashtra and 05 for the Kalyan office. The letters AB mark the series, while 1234 is the four-digit number that tells one MH-05 car from the next.

Number plate MH 05 AB 1234 labelled: MH is the state code for Maharashtra, 05 is the Kalyan RTO code, AB is the series and 1234 is the four-digit number

Worth knowing: The MH-05 code does not follow the owner. A Kalyan car sold to a family in Thane, or taken along on a move to Pune, still shows MH-05; the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Maharashtra or its registration details are changed.

HSRP number plates in Kalyan

HSRP number plates in Kalyan

Cars first registered at the Kalyan office from 1 April 2019 already came with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP), and the Maharashtra transport department does not ask their owners to apply again.

For an older MH-05 car, the transport department website names the portal where you book the plate and look up the date for your car. Fitment at a fitment centre carries no extra charge, while fitment at home is charged extra. Our Maharashtra RTO guide covers the remaining plate rules.

Moving house inside Maharashtra leaves the MH-05 number untouched. What changes is the address on the RC, and your insurer should be informed of it too.

Registering a new car in Kalyan

Registering a new car in Kalyan

  1. 1

    Insure the car first

You need a policy before registration, and you can buy it from the insurer you choose

    Showroom applies online

The dealer uploads your papers and address proof on Vahan

  3. 3

    Pay at the showroom

You pay the road tax and the RTO fee as part of the showroom bill

  4. 4

To sell an MH-05 car, start with Form 29 from the seller and Form 30 signed by both sides, then apply at the Kalyan office or on Vahan. A car costs ₹300 to transfer and a motorcycle ₹150.

The new owner must also take over the policy within 14 days.

Taking hypothecation off a Kalyan RC

Once the loan is closed, the lender issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Submit it on Vahan with Form 35 to have the loan removed from the RC, which costs nothing. You will find the document list in our Maharashtra RTO guide.

Kalyan RTO services online

For a Kalyan car, the Vahan portal handles vehicle requests and the Sarathi portal handles licences, with each request routed to the MH-05 office. The learner licence test in Maharashtra is an online test with Aadhaar authentication, which saves one trip to Kalyan.

Duplicate RC and RC status in Kalyan

When an RC goes missing or is damaged, the Kalyan office issues a duplicate on Form 26 for the fee in the fees table. Any MH-05 number can be looked up in the Kiwi Insurance RC status check.

Moving your car to Kalyan

Moving your car to Kalyan

Moving to Kalyan with a car from elsewhere in Maharashtra changes nothing but the address on its RC. A car from another state is re-registered with an MH number from the office for your address once it has been in Maharashtra for more than 12 months.

Steps for a car from another state

  1. 1

    Get the NOC

The RTO that issued the old number gives it on Form 28

  2. 2

    Apply in Maharashtra

After 12 months here, apply to the office for your Kalyan-side address

    Pay the tax on Vahan

The amount depends on how old the car is

  4. 4

    Inform your insurer

Send the insurer the new number and the new RC

For an owner leaving Maharashtra with an MH-05 car, the same steps run in reverse. Ask the Kalyan office for the NOC on Form 28, which is free, and register the car in your new state.

Worth knowing: On the day the RC shows a new number or address, inform your insurer as well. Every form you may need is in our Maharashtra RTO guide.

BH series registration in Kalyan

BH series registration in Kalyan

A Kalyan buyer who may be posted outside Maharashtra can ask the dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number in place of MH-05, so a later move needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC) or re-registration.

In the private sector, the employer signs Form 60 for you, and it qualifies only with offices in 4 or more states or union territories. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.

Eligibility rules and the tax that falls due every 2 years are explained in our Maharashtra RTO guide.

The office that registered an MH-05 car affects its Own Damage price, as insurers rate the car by that office’s zone. The tariff lists Mumbai and Pune as the Zone A cities in Maharashtra and the rest of India as Zone B, and it is silent on whether the Kalyan office counts as Mumbai, so ask your insurer which zone it applies.

Kalyan RTO FAQs

Kalyan uses MH-05. It is issued by the Kalyan deputy office, which reports to Thane RTO (MH-04) but keeps its own code, so an MH-05 car is not registered at Thane.
