Latur district now registers cars under two codes. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Latur city issues MH-24, and since August 2024, by local news reports, the Udgir office has issued MH-55 for Udgir and four other talukas.
On a Latur plate such as MH 24 AB 1234, the first pair of letters, MH, names Maharashtra and 24 names the Latur office. After that come the series letters AB, and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: A car registered as MH-24 before the Udgir office opened kept its number, even if its owner lives in Udgir. The code stays the same for any move within Maharashtra, and it changes only if the car is re-registered outside Maharashtra or its registration details are changed.
Cars sold new in Latur district from 1 April 2019 were fitted with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) before delivery, and the state transport department does not ask those owners to apply again.
An older MH-24 or MH-55 car is booked for the installation on the booking portal named on the Maharashtra transport department website, which lists Udgir separately from Latur. A fitment centre charges nothing extra for fitting, and home fitting costs more. Deadlines, plate types and the rest live on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
The city code, the Udgir code and the two other codes run from Latur
Latur district has two codes of its own. MH-24 is the city office and MH-55 is the Deputy RTO at Udgir, an office for that town and the talukas around it rather than for Latur city.
Latur is also the parent office for two Deputy RTOs outside the district. Dharashiv (MH-25) was the district Latur was carved from on 15 August 1982, and Ambajogai (MH-44) is in Beed district, even though Beed’s own MH-23 office reports elsewhere.
Where to go with an MH-24 car, and where with an MH-55 car
Latur city owners have one office, Parivahan Bhavan on Babhalgaon Road. Owners on the Udgir side of the district, going by news reports of the 2024 split, now deal with the Deputy RTO at Udgir instead.
The department lists Parivahan Bhavan as a full Regional Transport Office. Besides its own district work, it supervises Dharashiv, Ambajogai and Udgir, and the Omerga border check post comes under it too.
Udgir’s office is a Deputy RTO in Latur district, and the department’s 2026 office list gives it MH-55. A Marathi news report said it would start registering vehicles on 28 August 2024, for Udgir, Deoni, Jalkot, Ahmadpur and Shirur Anantpal talukas.
Worth knowing: Look at your Registration Certificate (RC) before you set off. An Ahmadpur car registered before the split may still be MH-24 with its file in Latur, while a newer one is MH-55 at Udgir.

Find your taluka below. The split between the two offices comes from news reports, not an official list, so check the office on your RC before relying on it.
With the number at hand, MH24AB1234 for instance, the finder at the top of the page names the registering office, and that office keeps the car’s papers.
Worth knowing: A move from Nilanga to Udgir does not turn an MH-24 car into an MH-55 car. Have the new address entered on the RC and inform your insurer of it.
Latur district borders Nanded, Dharashiv, Beed and Parbhani districts, as well as the state of Karnataka. Dharashiv is the old parent district, and its MH-25 office still answers to Latur.

One Maharashtra rate for MH-24 and MH-55 cars alike
Latur cars pay Maharashtra road tax once, at the first registration, and Udgir charges the same rate as Parivahan Bhavan. What the car runs on and what it costs decide the percentage.
For example: Take a ₹6 lakh petrol hatchback bought by an individual in Latur. At 11% the tax is ₹66,000, and a road safety cess is added to it, reported at 2% of the tax; Vahan shows the exact sum before you pay.
Petrol or diesel cars in a company’s name are taxed at 20%, whatever the price band
Under the Maharashtra electric vehicle (EV) policy, no road tax is due on an EV registered between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2030
CNG and LPG went up by 1%, and the maximum tax rose from ₹20 lakhs to ₹30 lakhs, reportedly from 1 July 2025
For a car arriving from another state the tax depends on its age, and Vahan shows the amount. More on our Maharashtra RTO guide
The 2024 split did not change what anyone pays. RTO fees are set nationally, so the Udgir office, Parivahan Bhavan and the Nanded office all charge the same amounts, paid on Vahan, and a dealer pays them for a new car.
For example: A family in Ausa that buys a car with a bank loan pays the Latur office ₹2,300 in RTO fees, made up of ₹600 for registration, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to note the loan, with road tax on top.
Once an MH-24 car turns 15, its registration renewal is ₹5,000, and ₹10,000 after 20 years. Every month of delay adds a late fee of ₹500 for a car and ₹300 for a motorcycle.
The plate, any state service charge and the Maharashtra road tax are separate from these RTO fees.
Your taluka decides whether the dealer’s file goes to Latur or Udgir
Showrooms in Latur file new registrations on Vahan, and the approving office depends on the buyer’s taluka. Going by the 2024 news reports, an Ausa buyer receives MH-24 while a buyer from Ahmadpur or Deoni receives MH-55.
No office registers an uninsured car, and you can choose any insurer you like
Your address on the Vahan form routes the file to Latur or to Udgir
Road tax and RTO fees are billed in the on-road price, line by line
After approval, the office for your taluka gives the car its MH-24 or MH-55 number
Your RC is issued after the High Security Registration Plate has been put on the car
A Latur showroom selling to a Jalkot buyer sends the file to Udgir
The policy is checked before the number is issued, at Zone B rates
Two-wheelers are registered at the same two offices on the same address rule
A used MH-24 car changes hands through Parivahan Bhavan, and an MH-55 car through Udgir, with the application made on Vahan. The seller signs Form 29, both parties sign Form 30, and the transfer costs ₹300 for a car and ₹150 for a motorcycle.
The insurance does not follow the RC on its own, so the buyer has 14 days to move the policy across.
Once the loan is closed, the bank’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) and Form 35 go in on Vahan, and the hypothecation comes off the RC free of charge. Which papers the bank and the office want is covered on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
For Latur and Udgir alike, vehicle tasks begin on the Vahan portal and licence tasks on the Sarathi portal, and the file then goes to the office for your address. The learner licence test in Maharashtra is taken online with Aadhaar authentication, without a trip to Babhalgaon Road.
If an RC goes missing or gets damaged, file Form 26 with the office that issued it and pay the duplicate fee from the fees table. Any MH-24 or MH-55 registration can be looked up on the Kiwi Insurance RC status check.
Licence applications start on Sarathi, and the driving test is taken in person at Latur or Udgir, depending on your address. Everything else you can do online is listed on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
Challans on MH-24 and MH-55 cars can be checked and paid on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in the mParivahan app, and each one lists the amount due for the offence.
Fines for other offences are on our Maharashtra RTO guide, listed by section.
An MH plate needs one change, a plate from elsewhere several
Owners moving to Latur from Pune or Solapur keep their MH number and only change the RC address. A car from Karnataka or any other state has to switch to an MH number after it has been kept in Maharashtra for more than 12 months.
The office that first registered the car issues the NOC on Form 28
Apply at Parivahan Bhavan, or at Udgir if you live in one of its talukas
Vahan works out the Maharashtra tax for an older car and shows it before you pay
With the new RC in hand, inform your insurer of the MH-24 or MH-55 number
Owners leaving Maharashtra with an MH-24 car reverse the process, starting at Parivahan Bhavan, which issues the NOC on Form 28, and the car is then registered in the new state.
Worth knowing: A new number or address should reach your insurer straight away, so inform your insurer the same day. Each form is described on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
Government staff, defence personnel and some private employees in Latur can ask the dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number. It suits anyone likely to move out of Maharashtra, as no No Objection Certificate (NOC) or re-registration is needed later.
Working for a private firm, you show Form 60, signed by your employer if it runs offices in 4 or more states or union territories. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
The 2-year tax and the full rules are on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
Each card is one RTO task in Latur or Udgir, with the official PDF
Latur and Udgir handle most of this paperwork on the Vahan portal or the Sarathi portal. The printed PDF is useful only if the office asks for a paper form.

Your premium depends on the zone of the registering RTO, and Latur and Udgir are both in Zone B, so their cars pay the lower Own Damage rate. Only Mumbai and Pune are Zone A in Maharashtra, and Third-Party cover is priced the same everywhere in India.
Zone B is the zone for every MH-24 and MH-55 car, so Own Damage cover usually costs less than for the same car registered in Pune
The Third-Party premium comes from one national schedule, so the choice between plans rests on Own Damage and optional covers
A car first registered in Pune is still rated in Zone A after a move to Latur, as the zone stays with that office
Look up the cashless partner garages around Latur or Udgir before you buy
Latur and Udgir register a new car only after it is insured
Whoever buys a Latur car has 14 days to take over its policy
When an outside car gets its Latur or Udgir number, inform your insurer
The number stays, but inform your insurer of the new address
Latur and Udgir both look for Third-Party cover in the registration papers, and Indian law makes it compulsory for every vehicle on the road With the RTO work finished, the next step is cover in your name. The cards below lead to Kiwi Insurance plans for a car or a bike.

MH-24 is the Latur code, issued at Parivahan Bhavan on Babhalgaon Road. Since the 2024 split, cars from the Udgir talukas get MH-55 from a separate Deputy RTO.
