The UP-62 code
Office and district
Free, no login needed
Jaunpur’s code is UP-62. The office that issues it is an Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO), the assistant grade of a Regional Transport Office (RTO), going by directories. One office, one code and one district: That is the whole picture for a Jaunpur car.
Spot UP 62 at the start of a plate and you are looking at a car from Jaunpur. On UP 62 AB 1234, UP is the state and 62 the district office. AB is the series. 1234, the four-digit number, belongs to that car alone within its series.

Worth knowing: UP 62 and UP 63 look alike, but 63 is Mirzapur. Varanasi, next door, is UP 65 or UP 65A. Your UP-62 code does not change if you move house within Uttar Pradesh. Only two things change it. One is registering the car again outside Uttar Pradesh, the other is a change to its registration details.
New UP-62 cars get a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) from the dealer. It is on the car before delivery. Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 made this compulsory from 1 April 2019.
Worth knowing: Older Jaunpur cars need one too. The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department website names the booking portal for installation and gives the date for older vehicles. The rest is covered in our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide.
UP-62, plus three codes from nearby that people confuse with it
Jaunpur has one code, UP-62. The Uttar Pradesh code list groups it with Varanasi, Ghazipur and Chandauli, and no source shows a second Jaunpur office or a split district.
Three codes cause mix-ups. Varanasi has two, UP-65 and UP-65A. Bhadohi, with its office at Gyanpur, has UP-66. And Mirzapur sits one number up, at UP-63.
An assistant office, a disputed pincode and no published hours
Jaunpur’s office is small on paper but does the district’s registration work. Directories name it ARTO Jaunpur. Only one gives a street area, Husainabad. They disagree on the pincode and on the hours, and no official page could be opened, so check before you go.
An ARTO is the assistant grade of transport office. For a car owner in Jaunpur that makes little difference, as this is still where a UP-62 vehicle is registered.
Since 1818, when a Deputy Collectorate was first set up there, according to the district’s official website. Today that district boundary is the one the UP-62 office works to.

Inside Jaunpur district, UP-62. Outside it, another office
The rule is simple. A Jaunpur district address means a UP-62 registration. An address in Varanasi, Bhadohi or Mirzapur means that district’s office, wherever you happen to shop for the car.
Not sure? The district named on your address proof decides, not the post office or the nearest town. For a car already on the road, the finder at the top of the page tells you the office from the number.
Worth knowing: Move across Jaunpur and your number stays UP-62. The RC address is corrected through Vahan. Then inform your insurer, so that the policy address matches.
Varanasi, next door, has two codes of its own. Bhadohi, another neighbour, registers at Gyanpur. Mirzapur and Prayagraj have one code each.

UP-61
UP-63
UP-70
Every UP code
State rate, one payment, at first registration Jaunpur uses the Uttar Pradesh road tax. It is paid once, when the car is first registered at UP-62. Price decides the band. Below ₹10 lakhs, AC decides the rate.
Eight per cent of the car’s cost, paid once, at the UP-62 office
The same price band with air conditioning costs one point more, at nine per cent
Eleven per cent, AC or not
The state electric vehicle (EV) policy has kept electric cars free of this tax. Vahan shows what yours owes
Buy new and the tax is in your on-road price, itemised on the invoice
Pay the UP tax minus 5% per full year of age. The cut stops at 75%
The rate is the same either way in Uttar Pradesh
10%, and 7% below that, with every other band in our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide
An assistant office does not mean smaller fees. RTO fees are national, so Jaunpur charges what Varanasi charges for the same job. Pay on Vahan. For a new car, the dealer pays during registration.
A Jaunpur example: A new car on a loan, registered at UP-62. Registration ₹600, smart card RC ₹200, hypothecation ₹1,500. Total RTO fees ₹2,300. Road tax is separate.
The 15-year renewal for that car is ₹5,000. After 20 years it is ₹10,000. Late by a month? Add ₹500 for a car, ₹300 for a motorcycle, and the same again for every further month.
Worth knowing: The table stops at Rule 81. Road tax, the HSRP and any Uttar Pradesh service or postal charge show up separately on Vahan.
Five steps, most of them done by the dealer on Vahan
Registering a new car in Jaunpur is mostly the dealer’s job. It files on Vahan, the UP-62 office approves, and the number is issued. Your part is the insurance and the address proof.
No policy, no registration. You can pick the insurer yourself
It must show a Jaunpur district address for a UP-62 number
Your on-road price already includes Uttar Pradesh road tax and the registration fee
Once the Jaunpur office is satisfied with the papers, it allots the UP-62 number
The car gets its HSRP, and the RC follows in your name
A Jaunpur address still gets UP-62, as the address counts, not the showroom
Your policy and RC should show the same Jaunpur address
New two-wheelers are registered by the dealer as well
Sold within Uttar Pradesh, a UP-62 car keeps its number. Seller: Form 29. Seller and buyer: Form 30. Fee: ₹300 for a car, paid on Vahan to the Jaunpur office.
Buyer in another state? The Jaunpur office issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC) first. Any buyer has 14 days to shift the policy to their name.
Loan closed? Get the bank’s No Objection Certificate and Form 35, apply on Vahan, and the UP-62 office drops the bank from the RC. There is no fee. Documents: See our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide.
Two portals do most of the work. The Vahan portal is for the car, the Sarathi portal for the licence. Car applications then go to the UP-62 office to be finished.
RC lost or damaged? Apply for a duplicate on Form 26 through Vahan. A car pays ₹300. Track it with the Kiwi Insurance tool to check your RC status.
Learner’s licence and test date: Sarathi. The test itself is taken in person. Renewal: Sarathi again. All other licence services are in our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide.
No insurance on a UP-62 car? Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 fixes it nationally, at ₹2,000 for a first offence and ₹4,000 for each one after.
Challans on UP-62 numbers are listed on echallan.parivahan.gov.in and in mParivahan, and can be paid there. Everything else: Our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide.
UP cars keep their numbers, out-of-state cars switch to UP-62 within a year
From Varanasi, Lucknow or any UP district, a car moving to Jaunpur keeps its plate. From another state, it gets 12 months on the old number. After that it must be registered at UP-62.
From the RTO that registered the car, on Form 28
With Jaunpur address proof, inside 12 months
Less 5% for each full year of age, never more than 75% less
Ask that state whether any of the tax paid there is returned
Leaving Uttar Pradesh? Run the steps backwards. The Jaunpur office gives the No Objection Certificate (NOC) on Form 28. The new state registers the car. Then claim back the unused UP road tax.
Worth knowing: Inform your insurer twice, at the change of address and when the UP-62 number arrives on the RC. Refund forms: Our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide.
Transferable job? The Bharat series (BH) is an option in Jaunpur. Eligible: Staff of government, defence and the public sector. Also eligible: Private sector employees, with Form 60, if the company has offices in 4 or more states or union territories.
The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car. BH tax is 8% below ₹10 lakhs, payable for 2 years at a time. Our Uttar Pradesh RTO guide explains the BH application in Uttar Pradesh.
Thirteen national forms, handled at UP-62
Jaunpur forms go to the UP-62 counter, whichever district you bought the car in. Forms not shown here can be downloaded from the Parivahan Sewa website.
The registering office sets the zone for your Own Damage premium. Jaunpur is not on the India Motor Tariff’s list of eight Zone A cities, so UP-62 cars are Zone B. That usually means a lower Own Damage premium than in a Zone A city. Third-Party pricing is national.
Zone B is Jaunpur’s zone. Own Damage usually costs less than in Zone A cities such as Chennai or Pune
Fixed by engine size for all of India, UP-62 cars included
An ARTO registration is rated exactly like one from a full RTO in the same zone
A Pune-registered car stays Zone A until it gets a UP-62 number
The UP-62 office registers only an insured car
Two weeks, 14 days, is all a buyer gets to retitle the policy after the RC transfer
Inform your insurer after re-registration so the policy shows it
By law, a UP-62 car or bike has Third-Party cover before registration and before it is driven Number done, policy next. The two links below lead to Kiwi Insurance cover for a Jaunpur car and for a Jaunpur bike.
