Subhash Bridge RTO is the office behind the GJ-01 code, and the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat titles it RTO Ahmedabad (GJ-1). It is titled as a full Regional Transport Office (RTO), while GJ-27 and GJ-38, also Ahmedabad district codes, belong to assistant offices.
Read GJ 01 AB 1234 from left to right: GJ stands for Gujarat, 01 points to the Subhash Bridge office in Ahmedabad, AB is the letter series and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: Government pages drop the zero and print GJ-1, yet the plate always reads 01. A car from this office still shows 01 after its owner moves to Surat, as the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Gujarat or its registration details are changed.
Since 1 April 2019, new cars registered at GJ-01 have left the showroom with the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) in place, supplied by the maker through the dealer. For an older Subhash Bridge car, the owner arranges the installation.
The plate is booked online through the booking portal named on the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website, which also gives the date for your car. What the plate must carry is explained in our Gujarat RTO guide.
GJ-01 first, then the codes that get mixed up with it
Subhash Bridge has a single code, GJ-01, the first number in the Gujarat series. GJ-27 and GJ-38 are other Ahmedabad district codes, and GJ-18 is Gandhinagar, a separate district, so check which office a code really stands for.
The listed address, the hours, the work it takes on and what to bring
As the Regional Transport Office for Ahmedabad, GJ-01 is named by directories after Subhash Bridge in the Sabarmati area, and one of them prints a full address with the 380027 pincode, so treat it as a guide and check it before you travel.
Looking the office up on the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website? Search for its official title, RTO Ahmedabad (GJ-1), as the Subhash Bridge name is the one directories use.
Move a car with GJ-01 on its RC into the buyer’s name, and add or clear a loan entry
Put a new Ahmedabad address on a GJ-01 RC, or replace one that was lost
Extend the registration of a GJ-01 car once its first 15 years are over
Apply on Form 28 for the No Objection Certificate (NOC) before the car is registered in another state

The areas Subhash Bridge covers could not be confirmed from an official source. The table gives example areas only, so look up your own address on Vahan before you apply.
Worth knowing: Treat the rows above as a starting point. The address printed on your RC decides the office, and the code on a car already on the road names the office that holds its file.
Other offices also register Ahmedabad district vehicles, among them the Ahmedabad East office with code GJ-27 and the Bavla office with code GJ-38. The card matching the code on your RC leads to that office, and the Ahmedabad guide sets the codes side by side.

Paid once to Gujarat, at the moment a GJ-01 car gets its number Subhash Bridge collects the Gujarat rate and has no rate of its own. A private car owned by an individual pays 6% of its cost once, at first registration, while a company or other non-individual owner pays twice that, 12%.
A car registered in one person’s name pays 6% of its cost, one time
The Gujarat Motor Vehicles Tax Act doubles the rate for an owner who is not an individual
Gujarat’s 1% charge on EVs ended on 31 March 2026. A GJ-01 EV is taxed at 6% unless a new scheme is notified; check Vahan first
Bringing a car in from another state? Re-registering it at Subhash Bridge costs the full Gujarat amount, the same tax a new Gujarat car pays under the Act. Vahan works out the exact sum, and other vehicle types are in our Gujarat RTO guide.
These amounts are national, so Subhash Bridge asks exactly what the Vastral office asks for the same job. They are paid on Vahan, and for a new car the dealer pays the registration fee along with the application.
A Subhash Bridge example: Buy a new car on a loan with a GJ-01 address and the RTO part of the bill is ₹2,300, made up of ₹600 to register, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to note the loan, with Gujarat road tax on top.
At 15 years a GJ-01 car is renewed for ₹5,000, and from year 20 the renewal is ₹10,000. A late renewal is charged by the month, ₹500 for each month a car is overdue and ₹300 for a motorcycle.
Worth knowing: Plate fitting and road tax are paid on top of everything in this table.
The dealer applies on Vahan, and a GJ-01 address sends the file here
When the address on your papers falls under GJ-01, Subhash Bridge registers the car, whichever Ahmedabad showroom sold it. Your documents go to the dealer, who submits the application on Vahan.
A valid policy has to exist before registration, from the dealer or bought on your own
Give the dealer proof of identity and of your GJ-01 address
The application goes on Vahan with the RTO fee and the Gujarat road tax
Once Subhash Bridge approves, the car gets its GJ-01 number and HSRP plates
A showroom across the city does not change the office; the address on your papers does
The invoice price already includes the RTO fee and the Gujarat road tax
Scooters and motorcycles with a GJ-01 address are registered here too
Selling a car whose RC reads GJ-01? Subhash Bridge handles the transfer, whichever part of Ahmedabad the buyer calls home. Form 29 comes from the seller and Form 30 carries both signatures; the RTO fee is ₹300 for a car or ₹150 for a motorcycle, paid on Vahan.
The buyer must then shift the policy into their own name within 14 days.
With the loan repaid, file Form 35 along with the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the lender. Rule 81 charges nothing for removing the entry, and the full checklist is in our Gujarat RTO guide.
For a GJ-01 vehicle, applications usually begin on the Vahan portal, and licence applications begin on the Sarathi portal. Subhash Bridge then deals with whatever still needs the office.
A lost GJ-01 RC is replaced through Form 26, at the fee shown in the fees table. For what an RC shows today, use the Kiwi Insurance RC status check.
Learner’s licences, driving test slots and licence renewals all go through Sarathi. The Vastral and Bavla offices are covered in our Ahmedabad RTO guide.
Fines on a GJ-01 car are looked up and paid online by entering the registration number on echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Driving without insurance costs ₹2,000 the first time and ₹4,000 for a repeat.
The full list of penalties is in our Gujarat RTO guide.
From elsewhere in Gujarat, from another state, or out of Gujarat with a GJ-01 car
A Gujarat car arriving at a GJ-01 address keeps its number, and only the address on the RC changes. A car from another state needs a fresh GJ-01 registration once it has been kept in Gujarat for more than 12 months.
Ask the RTO named on your current RC for the NOC on Form 28
After more than 12 months in Gujarat, file the registration with Subhash Bridge
The full Gujarat road tax is charged when the GJ-01 number is issued
If you are leaving Gujarat with a GJ-01 car, the same steps apply in reverse: Subhash Bridge issues the NOC on Form 28, and the new state then registers the car. Inform your insurer of the new number once you have it, and see our Gujarat RTO guide for the rest.
Does your job move you between states? A Bharat series (BH) number can replace GJ-01 on a new car, and the car then needs no NOC when you leave Gujarat.
It is open to defence, government and public sector employees, and to private sector staff whose employer works in 4 or more states or union territories and signs Form 60 for them. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
BH road tax is paid every 2 years rather than once; the details are in our Gujarat RTO guide.
Official PDFs for GJ-01 work at Subhash Bridge These national forms are mostly filled in online now. Print the PDF only if Subhash Bridge wants a paper copy from you.

Insurers price Own Damage cover by the office of registration, and GJ-01 is an Ahmedabad city office, which puts its cars in Zone A. A Subhash Bridge car therefore pays more for Own Damage than one registered in a Zone B Gujarat city, while Third-Party cover costs the same everywhere.
Zone A applies to every car registered at Subhash Bridge, under India Motor Tariff GR.10(i)
Its price depends on engine size, not on the office, so quotes differ only in Own Damage and optional covers
The car stays GJ-01. Inform your insurer of your new address, and ask if the zone is affected
The buyer of a GJ-01 car moves the policy within 14 days of the RC transfer
Valid cover is a condition of every registration at Subhash Bridge. Each time the office records a new owner, address or number on a GJ-01 RC, inform your insurer so that the policy and the RC match.
Third-Party cover is compulsory for a GJ-01 car or bike before Subhash Bridge registers it With the GJ-01 registration done, compare Kiwi Insurance plans for the car or the bike through these two cards.
