GJ-27 Vastral RTO and the Ahmedabad East office

On GJ 27 AB 1234, the letters GJ mean the car is from Gujarat and the 27 shows it was registered by the Ahmedabad East office, listed at Vastral. The pair of letters after that, AB, is the series, while 1234 is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: 27 comes much later in the Gujarat series than 01, yet it is still an Ahmedabad number. It stays on the car if the owner later shifts across the river or to Rajkot, as the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Gujarat or its registration details are changed.

High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) come fitted on every GJ-27 car first sold on or after 1 April 2019, as part of the delivery. Owners of earlier Ahmedabad East cars have to get the plates installed.

Ahmedabad East issues GJ-27 and no other code. GJ-01 belongs to the office titled RTO Ahmedabad, listed at Subhash Bridge, and GJ-38 to ARTO Bavla, so a GJ-01 or GJ-38 car was registered somewhere else.

Officially this is ARTO Ahmedabad East. One directory gives Mahadev Nagar Tekra in Vastral as the location and another names only Mahdevnagar, so take the location as a pointer and confirm it before setting out.

On the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website the office goes by Ahmedabad East rather than Vastral, which is worth knowing when you search for it there.

Before you go to the Vastral RTO

Where Ahmedabad East applicants take the driving test could not be confirmed from an official source, so read the venue on your Sarathi slot booking. For a new car, the showroom deals with Vastral on Vahan and you are not needed there.

One directory describes this office as serving localities on the eastern side of Ahmedabad, but no official list of its areas could be confirmed. Use the examples below with care and check your own address on Vahan.

Worth knowing: Neighbourhood names are only a rough guide. Your RC address decides the office, and a car already on the road shows its office in the code, 27 for Vastral.

A car registered in another state and moved to an Ahmedabad East address pays Gujarat tax in full when it is re-registered, as the Act charges it like a new Gujarat car. The exact amount appears on Vahan, and our Gujarat RTO guide covers other vehicles.

Vastral charges the national RTO fees, so a transfer or a duplicate RC costs the same here as at Subhash Bridge. Payment is made on Vahan, and the dealer covers the registration fee for a new car as part of its application.

A Vastral example: For a new financed car with a GJ-27 address, the RTO adds up ₹600 for registration, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 for the hypothecation, a total of ₹2,300 before road tax.

An Ahmedabad East car reaching 15 years pays ₹5,000 to renew, or ₹10,000 once past 20. Leave the renewal late and a car owner is charged ₹500 per month, against ₹300 per month for a motorcycle.

Worth knowing: The HSRP plates and the Gujarat road tax are billed apart from this table.

Buy a car anywhere in Ahmedabad and give an address that falls under GJ-27, and the registration goes to Vastral. You do not file it yourself, as the showroom applies on Vahan once your papers are in.

When a GJ-27 car is sold, Vastral records the new owner, wherever in Gujarat the buyer lives. The seller completes Form 29, seller and buyer sign Form 30 together, and Vahan collects ₹300 for a car or ₹150 for a motorcycle.

A policy does not follow the car by itself, so within 14 days the buyer should have it transferred.

Ending the loan (hypothecation) on a GJ-27 car

Once the bank is paid, send Form 35 and its No Objection Certificate (NOC) to Vastral to lift the entry, which costs no RTO fee. Step-by-step transfer papers are in our Gujarat RTO guide.

GJ-27 vehicle work is applied for on the Vahan portal, and licence work on the Sarathi portal. Vastral takes over from the online application wherever an officer still has to check something.

Duplicate RC and RC status for GJ-27 cars

Licence services for Vastral applicants

A challan on a GJ-27 car is settled online, on echallan.parivahan.gov.in, with the registration number. Being caught without insurance costs ₹2,000, and ₹4,000 if it happens again.

Move to Ahmedabad East with a Gujarat car and the number stays; you only change the address on the RC. A car from outside Gujarat that stays here for more than 12 months must be registered again and gets a GJ-27 number.

A buyer in Ahmedabad East who expects to be transferred to other states can ask for a Bharat series (BH) number on a new car in place of GJ-27, so no NOC is needed after a move.

Defence, government and public sector staff can apply, as can private sector staff of a company in 4 or more states or union territories, using Form 60. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.

How insurance links to the Vastral RTO

Vastral registers a car only when it is insured. After every change it makes to a GJ-27 RC, whether owner, address or number, inform your insurer so both documents agree.
