The Jamnagar code, GJ-10
Office and district
Free, no login needed
Jamnagar’s code is GJ-10, issued by RTO Jamnagar. If you live in Dwarka, Okha or Khambhalia, though, your district has been Devbhumi Dwarka since 15 August 2013, and its own office uses GJ-37.
Look at GJ 10 AB 1234 in four pieces. GJ is Gujarat, 10 is the Jamnagar office, AB is the letter series, and the last block, 1234, is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: If a car was registered at Jamnagar before Dwarka became a district, it may well still read GJ-10 today. It keeps those digits for good in Gujarat, and the Jamnagar code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Gujarat or its registration details are changed.
If your GJ-10 car was bought new on or after 1 April 2019, the dealer should have fitted its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). If it is older, Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 means it needs one fitted now.
Booking the fitting: Use the booking portal that the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website names, and check there which date applies to a GJ vehicle. The plate itself is explained on our Gujarat RTO guide.
GJ-10 for Jamnagar, and the GJ-37 code that took over Dwarka
Jamnagar city has a single code, GJ-10. The code most often confused with it is GJ-37, the office for Devbhumi Dwarka, the district that was part of Jamnagar until 2013.
Official page titles from the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat confirm both offices: RTO Jamnagar (GJ-10) and ARTO Devbhumi Dwarka (GJ-37).
The GJ-10 office at Lal Bangla Compound, as directories list it
For a Jamnagar address, registrations, licences, transfers and road tax all run through the GJ-10 office. Directories agree on Lal Bangla Compound, but no official source confirms it, so check the location with the office before you go.
Several directories give the location as Lal Bangla Compound. They print different pincodes, one of which belongs to a distant part of Gujarat, so no pincode is shown here.
Since 2013 your district office is the GJ-37 one, not Jamnagar
If you need a test, book its slot on Sarathi before you visit

Jamnagar on one side, the four Devbhumi Dwarka talukas on the other
If the address on your Registration Certificate (RC) is in Jamnagar district, the GJ-10 office is yours. If it is in Khambhaliya, Bhanvad, Okhamandal or Kalyanpur, those talukas form Devbhumi Dwarka district, whose office is GJ-37.
Which office holds a car’s file? The finder above answers that from a number such as GJ10AB1234.
Worth knowing: Moving from Jamnagar to Dwarka, or the other way, does not change the number. If you move, update the RC address and inform your insurer.
Devbhumi Dwarka (GJ-37) is the office that Jamnagar owners mix up most, since it was part of the same district until 2013. Morbi, Rajkot and Porbandar, the other districts next to Jamnagar, each register their own vehicles too.

Every GJ code
Charged by Gujarat once, whether the plate says GJ-10 or GJ-37 If you register a vehicle in Jamnagar, you pay Gujarat road tax once, at the start, worked out on its cost. When the owner is an individual, a car is taxed at 6%, and when a company or firm owns it the rate doubles to 12%.
Your GJ-10 car pays 6% of its cost when it is first registered, and nothing yearly after that
A new two-wheeler for private use in Jamnagar pays 6%, in one go
EVs paid 1% in Gujarat up to 31 March 2026 and the standard 6% after that, barring any new notified scheme. Vahan shows what is due
Jamnagar and Dwarka owners pay the same Gujarat tax, with no local amount on top. A ₹6 lakh car in your own name works out at ₹36,000.
The Act lets Gujarat charge part of the tax again on a sale, at most a quarter of it
Joint owners count as a non-individual, so the doubled rate is charged
Vahan gives the amount before payment. Our Gujarat RTO guide has the rates in full
If you compare Jamnagar with Dwarka, you will find the fees identical, since India sets one schedule for every office. Payment is on the Vahan portal, and when the car is new the dealer pays as part of the registration.
Worked example: If you finance a new car through a bank in Jamnagar, expect ₹2,300 in RTO fees: ₹600 for registration, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 for the hypothecation entry. Road tax is extra.
At 15 years a GJ-10 car’s registration needs renewing, for ₹5,000, and at 20 the renewal is ₹10,000. If you renew late, a car adds ₹500 a month to the bill and a motorcycle ₹300.
GJ-10 or GJ-37 depends on where you live, not where you shop
If you buy a new car with a Jamnagar address, the dealer applies on Vahan and the GJ-10 office registers it. If your address is in Dwarka or Khambhalia, it is in Devbhumi Dwarka district, which has its own code, GJ-37.
Insurance has to be active first, and any insurer may provide it, not only the dealer’s
Your address proof goes on Vahan, and it decides whether GJ-10 or GJ-37 handles it
The on-road price covers the Gujarat road tax and the RTO fee
Either GJ-10 or GJ-37 signs off the file and allots the number
Your car gets HSRP plates, and the RC follows in your name
A Dwarka or Okha buyer gets GJ-37 even from a Jamnagar showroom
If you buy a scooter, the same address rule applies
If the policy and Vahan papers match, later changes are simpler
If you sell a GJ-10 car, the Jamnagar office that holds its file records the new owner. You file Form 29 as the seller, you and the buyer sign Form 30, and the transfer fee for a car is ₹300.
Copies of the RC, insurance, a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate and buyer’s address
As the buyer, you move the policy to your name within 14 days
If hypothecation still shows on the RC, clear it before the sale with Form 35 and the bank’s No Objection Certificate (NOC). No fee is charged. Our Gujarat RTO guide has the remaining steps.
If you own a GJ-10 vehicle, use the Vahan portal for registration work and the Sarathi portal for your licence. Online applications for a Jamnagar address reach the GJ-10 office.
The driving test and any inspection the office requests
If your RC is damaged or goes missing, Form 26 replaces it for ₹300 on a car. For the latest record held against a GJ-10 number, check your RC status with Kiwi Insurance.
If you are learning to drive in Jamnagar, apply for the learner’s licence and book the test on Sarathi, then go to the office for the test. Our Gujarat RTO guide lists every other licence service.
If you drive a Jamnagar car with no valid insurance, section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 sets the fine at ₹2,000. If you are caught again, it is ₹4,000.
If you get a challan in Jamnagar, pay the amount shown on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or the mParivahan app. Our Gujarat RTO guide lists other offences.
A GJ plate stays, a plate from outside Gujarat does not
If your car already has a GJ number, a move to Jamnagar means a new RC address and nothing more. If it was registered in another state, section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 gives you 12 months in Gujarat before it needs a GJ registration.
If the car is from another state, its old RTO issues the NOC on Form 28
With a Jamnagar address, apply inside the 12 months
You pay the full Gujarat rate, the same as a new car would
If you are leaving Gujarat, the same steps apply in reverse: GJ-10 issues your NOC on Form 28 and the office in your new state registers the car.
Worth knowing: If your car comes from another state, inform your insurer of the Jamnagar address straight away, and again once it has a GJ-10 number. The forms are on our Gujarat RTO guide.
If your job in Jamnagar could take you to another state, the Bharat (BH) series lets the car move with you without a No Objection Certificate (NOC). It is for defence and government staff, and for private employees whose company has offices in 4 or more states or union territories, who apply with Form 60.
The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
If you choose BH, you pay tax every 2 years rather than once as Gujarat cars do. Our Gujarat RTO guide has the BH rates.

Your Own Damage premium is partly set by the zone of the registering office. Jamnagar, like Dwarka, is Zone B, whereas Ahmedabad is Zone A, so a GJ-10 car usually pays less for the same cover. Third-Party prices are national.
Zone B is the rating for GJ-10 and GJ-37 cars, so Own Damage usually costs less than for an Ahmedabad (Zone A) car
Third-Party is priced the same across India, so local quotes differ only in Own Damage and optional covers
If an older GJ-10 car is now kept in Dwarka, it is still a Zone B registration
If you split your week between Jamnagar and Dwarka, check cashless partner garages in both
The policy is needed before GJ-10 issues the number
If you buy a GJ-10 car, move the policy within 14 days
If an outside car becomes GJ-10, inform your insurer of the number
If you bring a GJ-01 car, it keeps Zone A and its number. Update the address on the policy
If a GJ-10 vehicle is on the road, Third-Party cover is the minimum If the RC shows your name, the Jamnagar policy should too. You can see Kiwi Insurance’s car and bike plans through these cards.
