The Morbi code, GJ-36
Office and district
Free, no login needed
Morbi became a district of its own on 15 August 2013, and its vehicles carry GJ-36. The office is an Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO): The Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat titles its page ARTO Morbi (GJ-36).
On GJ 36 AB 1234, the first pair of letters says Gujarat and 36 says the Morbi office. After them comes AB, the series, and 1234, the four-digit number that only this car has in the series.

Worth knowing: A Wankaner or Halvad car registered before the district existed keeps whatever code it was given. A Morbi plate, old or new, changes only if the car is re-registered outside Gujarat or its registration details are changed.
Any GJ-36 car bought new from 1 April 2019 onwards should have left the dealer with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). For cars registered before that, Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 still requires one to be fitted.
Where to book: The Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website names the booking portal Morbi owners use, along with the date set for GJ vehicles. Plate details are on our Gujarat RTO guide.
GJ-36, and the older Rajkot and Surendranagar codes some Morbi cars carry
GJ-36 is Morbi’s one code. Wankaner came from Rajkot district and Halvad from Surendranagar, so an older car here may carry GJ-03 or GJ-13 instead, and the second table explains both.
The Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat confirms the code and the office type in its page title, ARTO Morbi (GJ-36). The year GJ-36 was first issued is not known.
The GJ-36 assistant office and what is known about it
All registration, licence and RC work for a Morbi district address goes to the GJ-36 office. Its name and type are official, while the location below comes from one directory, so confirm it before you set out.
One directory puts ARTO Morbi in the Old Toll Naka Building near the bypass. Another still files the office under Rajkot district, a leftover from before 2013. As neither listing is official, confirm where the office is with ARTO Morbi before setting out.
Morbi learners pick the driving test date on Sarathi before the trip
It stays as it is, as a code does not change on a move within Gujarat
One gives the bypass building, the other only the town, so neither is final

Five talukas, one GJ-36 office
Whether you live in Morbi town, Malia, Tankara, Wankaner or Halvad, an address in the district puts a new registration with the GJ-36 office. The address printed on your Registration Certificate (RC) is what counts.
Type any number, such as GJ36AB1234, into the finder at the top to see which office registered a vehicle.
Worth knowing: Moving from Halvad to Morbi town, or anywhere else in Gujarat, leaves the number alone. Record the new address on the RC and inform your insurer.
Morbi borders its two parent districts, Rajkot and Surendranagar, as well as Jamnagar and Kutch. Each of the four registers vehicles at its own office, under its own code.

Gujarat’s one-time tax, paid at the GJ-36 office as anywhere in the state Road tax on a Morbi registration is the Gujarat state tax, charged one time when the vehicle is first registered. It is 6% of the cost for a car owned by an individual, and 12% when a company owns it.
One payment of 6% of the price, made when a GJ-36 number is first issued to an individual
Morbi two-wheelers bought new pay 6% of their cost, once
The Gujarat rate was 1% until 31 March 2026; a later EV owes the standard 6% unless the state notifies a new scheme. Confirm it on Vahan
No Morbi charge is added to the Gujarat rate. Whether the car is registered in Tankara or Halvad, the ₹6 lakh example still works out at ₹36,000.
A car re-registered in Morbi from another state pays the whole Gujarat rate
Double the rate applies, and the Act counts joint owners as a non-individual
Vahan shows it before you pay, and the Gujarat RTO guide lists every rate
Being an assistant office makes no difference to the fees: GJ-36 charges the same national amounts as the Rajkot RTO. Owners pay them on the Vahan portal, and the dealer handles payment for a car bought new.
Worked example: Suppose a Wankaner buyer takes a loan for a new car. Registration (₹600), the smart card (₹200) and noting the loan (₹1,500) add up to ₹2,300, and Gujarat road tax comes on top of that.
Keeping a GJ-36 car past its fifteenth year means a ₹5,000 renewal, or ₹10,000 beyond twenty. A missed renewal date costs a car owner ₹500 for every month of delay, while motorcycles pay ₹300 a month.
From the showroom to a GJ-36 RC
A new car for a Morbi district address is registered at the GJ-36 office, wherever it is bought. The dealer applies on Vahan, so a Halvad buyer shopping in Rajkot still comes home with a GJ-36 number.
No registration goes ahead without cover, and choosing the insurer is up to you
The dealer uploads your Morbi address proof, which routes the file to GJ-36
Road tax at the Gujarat rate and the RTO fee are already in the on-road price
ARTO Morbi approves the file and gives the car its number
The new HSRP plates are fitted, after which your RC arrives in your name
A Morbi address still decides the office, so the code is GJ-36
Scooters and motorcycles follow the same address rule as cars
Give the insurer the same Morbi address as the registration papers
Selling a GJ-36 car? ARTO Morbi keeps its file and records the new owner. Form 29 tells the office about the sale, Form 30 is signed by seller and buyer, and transferring a car costs ₹300.
Scans of the RC, policy, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate and buyer’s proof of address
Within 14 days the buyer needs to take over the policy
Is a bank loan (hypothecation) still on the RC? Form 35, with the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC), takes it off at no charge, and that has to happen before the sale. For the rest, read our Gujarat RTO guide.
From Malia or Tankara, there is no need to travel for most work. Vehicle services are on the Vahan portal and licence services on the Sarathi portal, and the GJ-36 office processes what you file.
A driving test, or an inspection that ARTO Morbi asks for
If a GJ-36 RC is lost, Form 26 gets a duplicate, and the fee for a car is ₹300. To see what the record says, check your RC status on Kiwi Insurance.
The learner’s licence and test booking for a Morbi applicant are both done on Sarathi, with the test itself at the office. Anything else on Sarathi is explained in our Gujarat RTO guide.
No insurance on a GJ-36 car means a ₹2,000 fine the first time it is caught, and ₹4,000 if it happens again (section 196, Motor Vehicles Act, 1988).
A challan issued in Morbi shows what is owed. Settle it on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or the mParivahan app, and see our Gujarat RTO guide for more fines.
Gujarat plates stay, other states’ plates change
Coming to Morbi with a GJ car from another district? Keep the number and update the address. With a car from outside Gujarat, section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 allows 12 months in the state before it has to be registered here.
The registering office in the old state issues it on Form 28
Use your Morbi address, and apply before the 12 months are up
The car pays the complete Gujarat tax, as the state’s Act requires
If you are leaving Gujarat, the same steps apply in reverse: Ask ARTO Morbi for the NOC on Form 28, then register the car in your new state.
Worth knowing: Your insurer needs to hear from you at two points, the change of address and the day the GJ-36 number is issued. The full process is on our Gujarat RTO guide.
For a Morbi resident whose job moves between states, the Bharat (BH) series avoids a No Objection Certificate (NOC) at each transfer. Defence and government employees can apply, as can private staff whose company works in 4 or more states or union territories, using Form 60.
The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
Tax on a BH car is collected in 2-year instalments, not as the single Gujarat payment. How much each instalment comes to is shown in our Gujarat RTO guide.
National forms with their official PDFs Every form here is set by the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, and most are completed online now. A printed copy is only for when ARTO Morbi asks for one.
Morbi learners and drivers use it to apply, to renew, or to correct licence details

Where a car is registered affects its premium through the insurance zone. GJ-36 is a Zone B office, while Ahmedabad is Zone A, so the Own Damage part of a Morbi policy usually costs less. Third-Party premiums are set nationally and stay the same.
Zone B applies to a Morbi car, which usually means a smaller Own Damage premium than in Ahmedabad, a Zone A city
The Third-Party price depends on the engine, not the town, so Morbi and Malia cars pay the same
A Morbi car still on GJ-03 is a Rajkot registration, and Rajkot is Zone B as well
Check which cashless partner garages are near your taluka before you buy
Cover has to start before ARTO Morbi issues the number
The new owner of a GJ-36 car moves the policy within 14 days
Once it gets a GJ-36 number, inform your insurer of it
A GJ-01 car keeps its number and Zone A rating in Morbi, so only the address on the policy changes
Third-Party cover is the legal minimum for a GJ-36 car or two-wheeler With the RC in your name, the policy for your Morbi car should match it. Choose a Kiwi Insurance car or bike plan from the two cards.
