Porbandar RTO GJ-25: Assistant office for 3 talukas

Porbandar vehicles carry GJ-25. The office is an assistant one, which the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat calls ARTO Porbandar (GJ-25). The district itself was carved out of Junagadh, which still has its own code, GJ-11.

Say your plate reads GJ 25 AB 1234. GJ means Gujarat. 25 means Porbandar. Then AB, a series. Last, 1234: That is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: Sell the car in Ranavav, or drive it to a new job in Ahmedabad, and GJ-25 stays. The 25 is lost only when your car is re-registered outside Gujarat or its registration details are changed.

Bought your car new after 1 April 2019? Then its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) came from the dealer. Older GJ-25 cars must get one fitted, under Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

Porbandar has one code, GJ-25. People mix it up with GJ-11, the Junagadh code, as Porbandar was once part of Junagadh district. The two are separate offices.

Both codes are confirmed by official office titles: ARTO Porbandar (GJ-25) and RTO Junagadh (GJ-11).

ARTO Porbandar is the office for a Porbandar address: Registration, RC changes, licences and road tax. Its name and code are official. Its address comes from directories, so check it before you go.

Porbandar ARTO office, GJ-25

Three directories put the office on Vadia Road, also spelt Wadia Road, in the New Kuvara area. Not one is official, so make sure of the location with the office before travelling.

Porbandar district has three talukas: Porbandar, Kutiyana and Ranavav. An address in any of them, as printed on your Registration Certificate (RC), points to the GJ-25 office.

Type GJ25AB1234, or the plate you are curious about, into the finder above.

Worth knowing: Kutiyana to Porbandar town, or Porbandar to Vadodara, the number is the same afterwards. Put the new address on the RC, then inform your insurer.

Porbandar adds nothing to the Gujarat rate. Pick a ₹6 lakh car and the tax is ₹36,000.

Porbandar charges the national fees, so you pay what a Junagadh owner pays. You pay on the Vahan portal. For a new car, the dealer pays for you as part of registration.

Worked example: A bank finances your new Porbandar car. Registration is ₹600. The smart card is ₹200. Noting the loan is ₹1,500. That makes ₹2,300, and Gujarat road tax is added on top.

Your GJ-25 car’s registration lasts 15 years. Renewal then costs ₹5,000, rising to ₹10,000 after 20 years. Late? Each month adds ₹500 for a car, ₹300 for a motorcycle.

Your dealer applies on Vahan, and the office for your address registers the car. Live in Porbandar, Kutiyana or Ranavav and that is GJ-25, even if you bought the car in Junagadh or Rajkot.

You can do most of it from home. Vehicle work is on the Vahan portal. Licence work is on the Sarathi portal. ARTO Porbandar then processes what you send.

No insurance on your GJ-25 car? The fine is ₹2,000. Get caught a second time and it is ₹4,000. That is section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Moving here with a GJ car? Just update the RC address. Moving here with a car from another state? Under section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it can stay 12 months in Gujarat. After that it needs GJ registration.

Posted to Porbandar, and likely to move on? The Bharat (BH) series works in every state, so there is no No Objection Certificate (NOC) at your next move. Defence and government staff qualify. So do private employees whose company has offices in 4 or more states or union territories, with Form 60.

The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
