The Rajkot code, GJ-03
Office and district
Free, no login needed
Rajkot’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) uses the code GJ-03. The Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat titles the office page RTO Rajkot (GJ-3), and directories list no second office inside the city.
Take GJ 03 AB 1234 as a Rajkot example. Read left to right: GJ for Gujarat, then 03 for the Rajkot office, then AB, a letter series, and finally 1234, the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: Sell a GJ-03 car to a buyer in Jamnagar, or move with it to Vadodara, and the plate keeps 03, since a Rajkot code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Gujarat or its registration details are changed.
New cars delivered by Rajkot dealers since 1 April 2019 arrive with the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) already fitted. Older GJ-03 vehicles need one fitted as well, as Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 requires.
Booking: A Rajkot owner books the installation on the booking portal named on the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website, which also shows the date for GJ vehicles. Plate features and stickers are on our Gujarat RTO guide.
The Rajkot code, and the Saurashtra codes that are not Rajkot
Rajkot’s code is GJ-03. The districts around it register their own vehicles, and the second table lists the codes people most often take for Rajkot ones.
Both the number and the office type are confirmed by the office page title the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat uses: RTO Rajkot (GJ-3).
The GJ-03 office and what is confirmed about it
Registrations, licences, transfers and road tax for Rajkot addresses all go through the GJ-03 office. Its name and code are official, but the street details come from directories, so check them before you travel.
Two directories place the office near the Marketing Yard, and one of them adds Porbandar Highway. These are listings rather than an official address, so check the location with the office before you go.
Book the slot on Sarathi before you set out for the GJ-03 office
Morbi district, which now includes Wankaner, has its own office, GJ-36
Both directories agree on the Marketing Yard area, and neither is official

The address on your Registration Certificate (RC) decides the office, not the showroom. For a Rajkot city address that is GJ-03, the code directories give for the whole city. An RC address in Morbi, Surendranagar or Jamnagar district belongs to that district’s own office.
Already own the car? Type its number, for example GJ03AB1234, into the finder at the top of the page to see the office that registered it.
Worth knowing: A move across Rajkot, or from Rajkot to any other Gujarat city, keeps the same number. Only the RC address changes, and your insurer should hear about it.
Rajkot is surrounded by Saurashtra districts that register their own vehicles. Morbi has been a separate district since 15 August 2013, and Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar and Surendranagar each have an office of their own.

Every GJ code
A one-time Gujarat tax, the same at GJ-03 as in any other district A Rajkot owner pays Gujarat road tax once, at registration, as a share of the vehicle’s cost. The city adds nothing of its own. Gujarat charges 6% for a car owned by an individual, while a company pays double, 12%.
Paid once on a new car registered to an individual at the Rajkot office
A new private two-wheeler on a GJ-03 number pays the same one-time 6%
The 1% charge on EVs lasted only to 31 March 2026. A GJ-03 EV owes 6% as long as no new scheme is notified. Check Vahan before paying
Rajkot pays the Gujarat rate with nothing added for the city, so a ₹6 lakh car in a single name comes to ₹36,000 here, as it would in Jamnagar.
The Act treats a jointly owned car as owned by a non-individual, so the doubled rate applies
A car brought into Gujarat pays the full Gujarat rate when it is re-registered at GJ-03
Vahan works out the exact tax. Every Gujarat rule is on our Gujarat RTO guide
These fees are national, so the Rajkot office charges what the Morbi or Jamnagar offices do. Payment goes through the Vahan portal, and on a brand-new car it is the dealer who settles it.
Worked example: A Rajkot family financing a new hatchback pays ₹600 for registration plus ₹200 for the smart card, and the bank’s loan adds ₹1,500 more. Total RTO fees, ₹2,300. Road tax is separate.
When a GJ-03 car turns 15, renewing its registration for five more years costs ₹5,000, and ₹10,000 once it is past 20. Renewing after the due date adds ₹500 for each month on a car and ₹300 a month on a motorcycle.
The dealer files it, and a Rajkot address brings a GJ-03 number
When you buy a new car in Rajkot, the dealer submits the registration on Vahan and the GJ-03 office approves it for a Rajkot address. If your address is in Morbi district, the car gets GJ-36 instead, even from a Rajkot showroom.
The policy has to begin before the RTO acts, and it can come from any insurer you pick
Your address proof goes with the file, so a Rajkot address sends it to GJ-03
The on-road price you pay already carries the RTO fee and the 6% Gujarat tax
The Rajkot office approves the file and allots a GJ-03 number
HSRP plates are fitted and the Registration Certificate is issued in your name
A Morbi address on the papers gives GJ-36, wherever in Rajkot the car is sold
A two-wheeler bought by a Rajkot owner is registered at GJ-03 by the same rule
Your policy and your Vahan file should both show one Rajkot address
A GJ-03 car sold in Rajkot is transferred by the Rajkot office, which holds its record. Form 29 is the seller’s notice, Form 30 carries both signatures, and a car transfer costs ₹300.
RC, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, policy and the buyer’s address proof
The buyer should transfer the policy within 14 days of the sale
A loan still noted on the RC (hypothecation) comes off first, with the bank’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) and Form 35, at no fee. Each step is covered in full on our Gujarat RTO guide.
Rajkot owners handle most vehicle work on the Vahan portal and licence work on the Sarathi portal. Whatever is filed online for a Rajkot address is processed by the GJ-03 office.
Driving tests, and any inspection the GJ-03 office asks for
For a lost or damaged RC, apply for a duplicate on Form 26, which costs ₹300 for a car. You can also check your RC status on Kiwi Insurance to see the record for a GJ-03 number.
Learners in Rajkot start on Sarathi; the same portal gives the test slot, and the test itself is taken at the office. Anything else a licence holder needs is on our Gujarat RTO guide.
Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 fines an uninsured GJ-03 driver ₹2,000 the first time; a second offence costs ₹4,000.
Pay the amount printed on a Rajkot challan on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in the mParivahan app. Other fines are on our Gujarat RTO guide.
What changes depends on the state on your RC
A car brought from Ahmedabad or Vadodara needs only a new address on its RC. Plates from another state are different. Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 gives such a car 12 months in Gujarat, after which it must carry a GJ number.
Ask the office that registered the car for a No Objection Certificate on Form 28
File for a Gujarat number at the Rajkot office inside the 12-month window
The Gujarat Act charges a car from another state the full Gujarat rate
If you are leaving Gujarat, the same steps apply in reverse: Rajkot gives the NOC, on Form 28, before an RTO in the other state takes over the car.
Worth knowing: Inform your insurer twice when a car from another state is re-registered in Rajkot, once for the new address and again when the GJ-03 number is issued. Forms and fees are on our Gujarat RTO guide.
A Rajkot owner likely to be posted to another state can choose the Bharat (BH) series, which is valid across India, so the next move needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC). It is open to defence and government staff, and to private employees whose employer has offices in 4 or more states or union territories, with Form 60.
The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
Instead of the one-time Gujarat charge, BH tax is paid every 2 years. See our Gujarat RTO guide for the rates.
Thirteen national forms, each with its official PDF
Before you submit: The Parivahan Sewa website lists the papers each form needs, and links to the rest of the RTO forms.
Part of what sets the premium is the zone of the registering office. A GJ-03 car is rated Zone B and an Ahmedabad registration Zone A, so Own Damage cover usually costs less for a Rajkot car. Third-Party premiums are national and do not change.
Zone B covers every Rajkot registration, so Own Damage is usually cheaper than for a car registered in Ahmedabad (Zone A)
Third-Party rates are fixed nationally, so two similar GJ-03 cars differ only on Own Damage and optional covers
Morbi, Jamnagar and Porbandar registrations are rated Zone B too, so nearby cars are priced on the same zone
Look for cashless partner garages near your home and your workplace in Rajkot before you pick a plan
The policy must be in place before the GJ-03 number is issued
Bought a second-hand GJ-03 car? Shift the old owner’s policy to yourself within 14 days
A car from another state gets a GJ-03 number here, so inform your insurer of it
A GJ-01 car moved to Rajkot keeps its number and its Zone A rating, though the insurer still needs your Rajkot address
No Rajkot office will register a car or scooter, nor may it be driven, without Third-Party cover Once the RC for your Rajkot car is in your name, put the policy in your name as well. Both Kiwi Insurance plans, for the car and for a bike, open from the cards here.
