Vadodara has one registering office that the state confirms. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) Vadodara uses GJ-06, and directories place it at Darjipura, near Golden Chokdi on NH-8, so a car registered in the city normally starts its number with GJ 06.
Picture a Vadodara car showing GJ 06 AB 1234. GJ marks a Gujarat registration and 06 points to RTO Vadodara. AB is the letter series, and 1234 is the four-digit number that sets this car apart within that series.

Worth knowing: A GJ-06 car sold to a buyer in Anand, or taken along when its owner moves to Rajkot, keeps the 06, since the code on a Vadodara plate changes only if the car is re-registered outside Gujarat or its registration details are changed.
A car registered by RTO Vadodara on or after 1 April 2019 got its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) from the dealer when it was sold. An older GJ-06 car without one needs the plate fitted, as Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 requires.
Book the installation on the booking portal named on the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website, and check there the date set for your GJ vehicle
The plate features and the notifications behind the rule are explained on our Gujarat RTO guide.
The one confirmed Vadodara code, a code some listings add, and the neighbouring codes
Only GJ-06 is confirmed for Vadodara on the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat website. The tables also show the GJ-29 that some listings give the city, and the codes of the districts around it, which are easy to mistake for Vadodara ones.
Two of those neighbours took in land that was once part of Vadodara district. Chhota Udaipur is reported to have become a district of its own on 15 August 2013 and now uses GJ-34, and Tilakwada taluka is listed as part of Narmada district, with GJ-22, since 2 October 1997.
The GJ-06 office, its listed address, and the GJ-29 listing to confirm
Registration, licences, ownership transfers, address changes and road tax for Vadodara owners all go through the GJ-06 office. Four directories agree on where it is, but the address is not confirmed on an official page, so check it before you travel.
The Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat lists this office as RTO Vadodara (GJ-6), a full Regional Transport Office. Directories put it beside NH-8, near Golden Chokdi, in Darjipura.
Some insurer listings show a second code, GJ-29, as ARTO Vadodara (Darjipura) on the same campus. It does not appear on the Commissionerate’s own pages, and one public list calls it not allocated, so do not count on it as a working office. If an RC shows GJ-29, confirm with the Commissionerate of Transport, Gujarat which office holds the file.
Worth knowing: A learner who needs the driving test at RTO Vadodara books the slot on Sarathi first, rather than turning up at the counter.

The address on your Registration Certificate (RC) picks the office, not the showroom where the car was bought. A Vadodara address normally leads to GJ-06, while an address in a neighbouring district goes to that district’s own office.
Already registered? Type the number, for example GJ06AB1234, into the finder at the top of this page, or look it up on the Vahan portal. Later work, such as a transfer or a duplicate RC, goes to the office that holds the car’s file.
Worth knowing: A house move within Vadodara, or on to another Gujarat city, leaves the GJ-06 number alone. The RC needs the new address, and so does your insurer, so inform your insurer when you update it.
Vadodara district borders Anand, Panchmahal, Chhota Udaipur, Narmada and Bharuch, and each of them registers cars under its own GJ code. For codes further away, see our Gujarat RTO guide.

One payment at registration, at the Gujarat rate A new car registered by RTO Vadodara pays Gujarat road tax once, at registration, as a share of its cost. Vadodara adds no city charge of its own, so the rate is the one every Gujarat office applies.
Paid once on a new private car or two-wheeler owned by a person, as 6% of its cost
Twice the individual rate when a company or firm registers the car, under the Gujarat Act
EVs were charged 1% only until 31 March 2026 and now pay 6%, pending any newly notified scheme. Look up today’s amount on Vahan
A car that comes from another state is taxed at the full Gujarat rate when it is re-registered here, just as if it had been registered new in Gujarat. That rule is written into the Gujarat Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958.
A GJ-06 registration pays the same tax as one in Anand or Rajkot
A car registered in two names is taxed as if a non-individual owned it, at the doubled rate
Your exact amount appears on Vahan before payment, and the state-wide rates are on our Gujarat RTO guide
Registration fees come from national rules, so the GJ-06 office charges what Anand or Ahmedabad charge. They are paid on the Vahan portal, and when the car is new the dealer pays them while filing the application.
Worked example: A buyer in Vadodara who finances a new car pays ₹600 to register it, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to note the loan, a total of ₹2,300 in RTO fees before road tax.
When a GJ-06 car reaches 15 years, a five-year renewal costs ₹5,000, rising to ₹10,000 past 20 years. The late fee is charged by the month, at ₹500 for a car and ₹300 for a motorcycle.
Your home address, not the showroom, picks the code
In Vadodara the dealer files the new car’s application on Vahan, and the office that registers it is the one for the buyer’s address. A buyer living in Vadodara gets GJ-06, while one living in Anand gets GJ-23 even if the showroom is in Vadodara.
A valid policy comes first, and you can buy it from any insurer, not only the one the dealer offers
The application goes in with your address proof, which points it to RTO Vadodara or another office
Gujarat road tax and the RTO fee are part of the on-road price on the invoice
Once the office approves the file, the car gets its GJ-06 number
Plates go on at the dealer, then the GJ-06 RC arrives in your name
A scooter bought by a Vadodara owner follows the same steps and also gets GJ-06
The policy and the Vahan application should show one and the same Vadodara address
When the RC arrives, check the GJ code, your name and the address before anything else
Selling a GJ-06 car means asking RTO Vadodara, which holds its record, to change the owner, on Vahan or at the counter. The seller gives notice on Form 29, both people sign Form 30, and the transfer fee for a car is ₹300.
The GJ-06 RC with the policy, a current Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate and proof of where the buyer lives
The Vadodara buyer has 14 days from the sale to transfer the policy into their name
A car still showing a loan (hypothecation) needs the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) and Form 35 first, which costs nothing. Our Gujarat RTO guide walks through the rest.
Vadodara owners can do most RTO work on the Vahan portal for the vehicle and the Sarathi portal for the licence. The application is still handled by the GJ-06 office, or by whichever office covers the address given.
Your driving test at RTO Vadodara, plus any vehicle check the office calls for
If the RC is lost or damaged, apply for a duplicate on Form 26 and pay ₹300 for a car. To see where a GJ-06 number stands now, check your RC status on Kiwi Insurance.
A new driver in Vadodara applies for the learner’s licence on Sarathi, then books the driving test there and takes it in person. For the remaining services, see our Gujarat RTO guide.
A GJ-06 driver stopped on NH-8 without valid insurance pays ₹2,000 the first time and ₹4,000 on a repeat offence, under section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Gujarat sets its own compounding amounts for some offences, so pay the amount printed on the challan, through echallan.parivahan.gov.in or mParivahan. Every other offence is on our Gujarat RTO guide.
What changes depends on where the car was registered
A car registered elsewhere in Gujarat keeps its number when its owner moves to Vadodara. Under section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, an outside-state car kept in Gujarat beyond 12 months must be re-registered with a GJ number.
Apply on Form 28 to the office that first registered the car for its No Objection Certificate (NOC)
Apply to the office for your Vadodara address before the car completes 12 months in Gujarat
The tax is worked out at the full Gujarat rate, as for a new registration here
If you are leaving Gujarat, the same steps apply in reverse: RTO Vadodara, as keeper of the GJ-06 file, gives the NOC on Form 28 and your new state takes over the registration.
Worth knowing: Inform your insurer twice after a move from another state, once for the new address and again when the GJ-06 number is issued. Forms are covered on our Gujarat RTO guide.
A Bharat series (BH) number fits a Vadodara owner whose job moves them between states, as the plate stays valid across India. Eligible owners are defence and government staff, plus private employees backed by Form 60 from an employer with offices in 4 or more states or union territories.
The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
BH tax falls due every 2 years instead of in one go at registration, and our Gujarat RTO guide carries its rates.
National forms a Vadodara owner may need, with the official PDFs
Before you submit: The Parivahan Sewa website lists the papers for each service and carries every other RTO form.
Your premium depends on the office that registered the car, not where you live. A GJ-06 car is rated Zone B, while the same car registered in Ahmedabad is Zone A, so the Own Damage premium is usually lower on the Vadodara registration. Third-Party cover costs the same in both.
Vadodara is in Zone B for Own Damage insurance, so its premium usually runs below a Zone A city such as Ahmedabad
The Third-Party price is notified for the whole country by engine size, so quotes differ on Own Damage and optional covers
A car registered in Ahmedabad stays Zone A after it comes to Vadodara, as the rating follows the office of registration
If you live in one part of Vadodara and work in another, check cashless partner garages near both before you pick a plan
The policy has to be in force before RTO Vadodara allots the GJ-06 number
A buyer of a GJ-06 car has 14 days to move the existing policy into their name
Once the car is re-registered with a GJ number, inform your insurer of the new number
A GJ-01 car moved to Vadodara still rates as Zone A and keeps its plate, so inform your insurer only of the change of home
Third-Party cover is the legal minimum for any car or bike on a Vadodara road When the RC of a GJ-06 car moves into a new name, the policy should follow it. Kiwi Insurance has plans for cars and for bikes, linked below.

GJ-06. It belongs to RTO Vadodara, the Regional Transport Office that directories place at Darjipura near Golden Chokdi. Some listings also show GJ-29 for the city, but that code is not confirmed.
