Jayanagar RTO is the name most people use for Bengaluru South, the KA-05 office, and one of only two offices in the city led by a Deputy Commissioner for Transport and Senior RTO. The open question is the building, as the listings still say Jayanagar while other reports point elsewhere.
In KA 05 AB 1234, KA stands for Karnataka, 05 is the Bengaluru South office that most people still call Jayanagar RTO, AB is the letter series and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: A KA-05 owner who later settles in Hubballi, or simply moves across Bengaluru, keeps 05 on the plate, since a plate code like this changes only if the car is re-registered outside Karnataka or its registration details are changed.
Bought new on or after 1 April 2019, a KA-05 car left the showroom with its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) put on by the dealer.
An older Bengaluru South car still needs one installed. Book it through the booking portal named on the Karnataka Transport Department website, which passes owners to the SIAM site, and check the date for your car there. Plate stickers and the rest are in our Karnataka RTO guide.
Bengaluru South has a single code, KA-05, and no earlier code for it appears in the department’s report. The other codes below are the ones people most often mix up with it, through a shared rank, a nearby name or a directory listing.
Where the office may be now, what it handles and what to bring
Confirm where KA-05 works before you set out. Most directories still give the Jayanagar Shopping Complex in 4th T Block East, but one encyclopaedia entry reports a move to J.P. Nagar, one directory names Anjanapura, and the department’s 2021-22 report said a new Bangalore South building was nearly ready.
No official address list for the Bengaluru offices was available, so take the KA-05 Registration Certificate (RC) and your papers only once you know which building is open. Directories even differ on whether Saturday is a working day.
Put a used KA-05 car in the buyer’s name, or note a car loan on its Registration Certificate
Change the address after a move within Karnataka, or replace a lost RC
Get the No Objection Certificate (NOC) a KA-05 car needs to leave Karnataka
Renew the registration once a KA-05 car reaches 15 years
The department’s report places the city’s automated driving test tracks at Jnanabharathi (KA-41) and Electronic City (KA-51), not at Bengaluru South, so book the test on Sarathi and check where your slot is. Autorickshaw permits and KSRTC or BMTC vehicles go to the KA-57 office.

Go by the office name and your RC. KA-05 is the Bengaluru South office, so its name ties it to the south of the city, and the code on an existing RC shows which office keeps that car’s file. A dealer registering a new car sends it to whichever office covers the home address on your papers.
Worth knowing: Banashankari causes the most doubt. Directories link it to KA-58 or KA-59, and neither code is on the department’s 2021-22 office list, so read the code printed on the RC rather than trusting a listing. An official street-by-street list for Bengaluru South was not available.
Moving house from one part of south Bengaluru to another only changes the address on the RC. Apply on Form 33 and inform your insurer of the new address.
Bengaluru has eight other offices that register private cars, and the department also lists an office at Chandapura without a code. These are the ones a KA-05 owner is most likely to need, with the city guide and the Karnataka page.

KA-05 collects the Karnataka lifetime rate, once per car
Bengaluru South simply collects the Karnataka lifetime road tax, once, when a KA-05 car is first registered, and the rate is the one charged at every office in the state, for a person or a company alike.
A new electric car pays 5%, 8% or 10% by cost from 1 May 2026; before that date, one costing up to ₹25 lakhs paid no lifetime tax. A car from another state owes Karnataka tax once it has stayed here more than 30 days, and the rest of the rules are on our Karnataka RTO guide.
Nothing about the KA-05 fees is local, as the Central Motor Vehicles Rules fix them for the whole country, and Bengaluru South collects them through the Vahan portal. Buy new and they are folded into the dealer’s on-road price.
For example: Finance a new car from a Bengaluru South address and the RTO part of the bill comes to ₹2,300 before road tax, made up of ₹600 to register it, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to record the loan.
At 15 years, renewing a KA-05 registration costs ₹5,000, rising to ₹10,000 once the car is past 20. Let the renewal lapse and the bill grows by ₹500 a month for a car, or ₹300 for a motorcycle.
Want a particular number? The department’s 2021-22 report puts a choice number at ₹20,000 in the running series and ₹75,000 in an advance series, and advance series can also go to auction.
Road tax, both cesses and the HSRP are paid on top of these fees.
The dealer files it, and a south Bengaluru address brings it to KA-05
A new car for a Bengaluru South address is entered on Vahan by the dealer, and the approval comes from KA-05, set by where you live rather than where the showroom is. Bring your address proof to the dealer, as that is what sends the file here.
No RC is issued without a policy, and the choice of insurer is yours to make
The address on your papers decides that Bengaluru South approves the car
Lifetime tax, both cesses and the ₹600 fee are collected by the dealer and paid on Vahan
Once the office approves the file, the car is given its KA-05 number
With the HSRP fitted by the dealer, Bengaluru South issues your RC
A showroom in another part of the city does not change the office; your address does
A new scooter or motorcycle pays a ₹500 welfare cess, half the ₹1,000 on a car
The policy for a KA-05 car is priced in Zone A, as Bengaluru is a Zone A city
Sell a KA-05 car and Bengaluru South records the new owner, wherever the buyer lives. The seller signs Form 29, both sides sign Form 30, and the application goes in on Vahan with a fee of ₹300 for a car or ₹150 for a motorcycle.
A buyer of a KA-05 car gets 14 days from the transfer to have the policy put in their name.
Once the loan is repaid, file Form 35 with the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC), and the bank’s name comes off the RC with no RTO fee. Every step of the loan removal, with its papers, is on our Karnataka RTO guide.
Most KA-05 work begins on the Vahan portal for the car and the Sarathi portal for the licence. Since 1 November 2021, Karnataka has offered 18 Vahan and 15 Sarathi services that need no trip to the office.
Replacing a KA-05 RC that is lost or torn takes Form 26 and the duplicate fee shown in the fees table. To look up any registration, use the Kiwi Insurance RC status check.
A KA-05 resident can start a licence application on Sarathi or walk into a Bangalore One or Karnataka One centre instead. The automated tests run at Jnanabharathi and Electronic City, and renewals are on our Karnataka RTO guide.
There is no fine counter to visit at Bengaluru South. Search the KA-05 number on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in mParivahan, and pay what the challan shows.
Every other offence, with its fine, is on our Karnataka RTO guide.
Arriving in south Bengaluru, or leaving Karnataka with a KA-05 car
Coming to south Bengaluru from Mysuru or Hubballi, keep your KA number and change only the address on the RC. A car from another state follows three separate rules, set by time spent in Karnataka.
Request the NOC on Form 28 from the office named on your present RC
Pay Karnataka tax on Vahan once the car has stayed here more than 30 days
Past 12 months in Karnataka, Bengaluru South re-registers the car under KA-05
Put the KA-05 plate on the car, then inform your insurer of the new number
Taking a KA-05 car out of Karnataka for good? Bengaluru South issues its NOC on Form 28, so apply well before moving day. Part of the lifetime tax can be refunded under the Karnataka Act when a car is moved out, and Bengaluru South is the place to ask how; our Karnataka RTO guide covers the rest of the move.
Working for an employer that may post you to another state? A buyer with a Bengaluru South address can ask the dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number instead of KA-05, so a later move needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Form 60, signed by a private sector employer that has offices in 4 or more states or union territories, goes to the dealer with the application. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
Our Karnataka RTO guide covers who can apply for a BH number and the tax it carries.

The premium follows the office that registered the car, and KA-05 is a Bengaluru city office, so a Jayanagar car is priced in Zone A for Own Damage, the zone the India Motor Tariff gives Bangalore. Third-Party cover costs the same across India.
Zone A applies to a Bengaluru South car for its whole life, even if the owner later settles in Mysuru
The Third-Party premium is set for all of India by engine size, so compare Own Damage cover and optional covers
Once Bengaluru South records you as the owner, ask the insurer within 14 days to move the policy into your name
If the office has changed building, the car keeps its zone, which follows the KA-05 code
No policy, no registration, at Bengaluru South or anywhere else. When the office records a new owner, a new address or a KA number for a car from another state, inform your insurer so the policy matches the RC.
The law asks for at least Third-Party cover before any KA-05 car or bike is registered or driven With the KA-05 paperwork behind you, the two cards below open the Kiwi Insurance plans, one for a car and one for a bike.

Most directories still list the Jayanagar Shopping Complex in 4th T Block East, Bengaluru 560011. One encyclopaedia entry says the office has moved to J.P. Nagar and one directory says Anjanapura, so confirm the location before you go.
