Koramangala RTO at a glance

Koramangala RTO is the name most people use for KA-01, the Bengaluru Central office and one of two city RTOs led by a Deputy Commissioner for Transport and Senior RTO. Check its address before a visit, as the department completed a new building for it in 2021-22.

How to read a Koramangala RTO (KA-01) number plate

How to read a Koramangala RTO (KA-01) number plate

Take KA 01 AB 1234. KA is Karnataka, 01 says the Bengaluru Central office registered the car, AB is the letter series and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Number plate KA 01 AB 1234 labelled: KA is the state code for Karnataka, 01 is the Bengaluru Central RTO code, known as Koramangala RTO, AB is the series and 1234 is the four-digit number

Worth knowing: The 01 stays with the car for its whole life in the state. Shift from a central flat to a house in Yelahanka and the plate still reads KA 01, since the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Karnataka or its registration details are changed.

A KA-01 car bought new on or after 1 April 2019 left the showroom with its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) already fitted. An older Bengaluru Central car needs one installed.

Bookings go through the booking portal named on the Karnataka Transport Department website; that portal hands you over to the SIAM site, and the date that applies to your car is listed there. Stickers and other plate rules are covered in our Karnataka RTO guide.

Koramangala RTO code and the codes mixed up with it

KA-01 first, then the Bengaluru codes people confuse with it

Koramangala RTO issues one code, KA-01. Three others are easily confused with it: KA-05, the second office led by a senior officer; KA-51, the Electronic City office for the southern suburbs; and KA-57, a city code that private cars never carry.

What the Koramangala RTO does not handle

The city’s two automated driving test tracks are at the Jnanabharathi (KA-41) and Electronic City (KA-51) offices, so your Sarathi booking shows where the test happens. Autorickshaw permits go to the KA-57 office, and a new car comes to KA-01 through the dealer’s Vahan filing, not a walk-in visit.

Road tax at Koramangala RTO

Road tax at Koramangala RTO

KA-01 collects the Karnataka lifetime tax, once per car

Koramangala RTO collects the Karnataka lifetime road tax when a KA-01 car is first registered and has no rate of its own. The cost of the car and whether it runs on electricity decide the band, and an individual and a company pay alike.

A car brought in from another state owes Karnataka tax once it has stayed in the state for more than 30 days. When its registration moves to Karnataka, it pays a share of the lifetime tax set by its age, 93% for a car up to 2 years old, falling to 25% after 15 years.

New electric cars have paid 5%, 8% or 10% since 1 May 2026. Two-wheeler and other Karnataka tax rules are on our Karnataka RTO guide.

RTO fees and charges at Koramangala RTO

RTO fees and charges at Koramangala RTO

KA-01 charges the national RTO fees, so a Bengaluru Central task costs what it would at any other Karnataka office. The money is paid on the Vahan portal, and for a new car it is part of what the dealer collects.

For example: A new car on a loan registered through KA-01 pays ₹2,300 in RTO fees, made up of ₹600 for registration, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 for the hypothecation, with road tax on top.

An older KA-01 car pays ₹5,000 to renew at 15 years and ₹10,000 after 20, plus ₹500 for each month the renewal runs late, or ₹300 for a motorcycle.

Want a choice number on a KA-01 car? The department’s 2021-22 annual report puts one from the running series at ₹20,000 and one from an advance series at ₹75,000.

Outside these fees, a buyer also pays the road tax with both cesses and the price of the HSRP.

Cover must exist before the RC does, and picking the insurer is your call

Selling a car whose RC starts KA 01? Bengaluru Central records the new owner even when the buyer lives in Whitefield. The paperwork is Form 29 from the seller and Form 30 signed by both, and Rule 81 sets ₹300 for a car, ₹150 for a motorcycle.

From the day the RC changes, the new owner gets 14 days to shift the policy across.

Removing a loan (hypothecation) at Koramangala RTO

Once the last instalment is paid, send the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) with Form 35 to KA-01, and the loan comes off the RC without an RTO fee. Papers for every step are listed in our Karnataka RTO guide.

Moving your car to Koramangala RTO

Moving your car to Koramangala RTO

For owners settling in Central Bengaluru, and for KA-01 cars heading out of Karnataka

A car already on a KA number needs only its RC address updated when you move into Central Bengaluru. A car from another state owes Karnataka road tax once it has been here more than 30 days, and after 12 months in Karnataka it must be re-registered, at KA-01 if your address falls under Bengaluru Central.

If you are leaving Karnataka for good, Bengaluru Central is the office that issues the Form 28 NOC for a KA-01 car, so apply well before moving day. The Karnataka Act provides refund rates for part of the lifetime tax when a car goes to another state, so ask the office how to claim yours, and inform your insurer once the new number is issued.

BH series registration at Koramangala RTO

BH series registration at Koramangala RTO

If your job may take you to another state, ask the dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number in place of a KA-01 one. A BH car needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC) when you move.

An employee of a private company qualifies only if the employer has offices in 4 or more states or union territories and signs Form 60 for the dealer. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.

Eligibility rules and the two-yearly BH tax are explained on our Karnataka RTO guide.
