KR Puram RTO is the Bengaluru Urban office behind the KA-53 code, named after Krishnarajapuram on the eastern side of the city. An owner whose RC gives an address in its area deals with this office for registration and RC work.
Here is how the four parts of KA 53 AB 1234 break down for a car from this office. KA names Karnataka, 53 names the KR Puram office, the letters AB give the series, and 1234 is the four-digit number.

Worth knowing: The 53 records where the car was first registered, not where it is parked today, so the plate stays as it is when an owner moves from Whitefield to Jayanagar. Settling anywhere else in the state later makes no difference to the 53 on a KR Puram car, which changes only if the car is re-registered outside Karnataka or its registration details are changed.
Every KA-53 car first registered on or after 1 April 2019 has carried its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) since delivery, as the dealer puts it on.
An older KR Puram car still needs the plate installed. Plates for older KA-53 cars are booked online rather than at Old Madras Road, and the Karnataka Transport Department website names the booking portal, sends owners on to the SIAM site and shows the date for each vehicle. Stickers and the other plate rules are on our Karnataka RTO guide.
KA-53 first, then the codes an east Bengaluru address is often mixed up with
KR Puram works with a single code, KA-53. East Bengaluru owners still mix it up with KA-03, the Bengaluru East office, and with KA-61, a code that directories give for Marathahalli.
Worth knowing: No office for KA-61 appears in the department’s 2021-22 office list, so a Marathahalli owner should go by the code printed on the RC rather than by a directory listing.
Where directories place it, the hours, what it handles and the papers to bring
Directories agree that the KR Puram office is on Old Madras Road but not on the exact spot. Most give 345/4, Bhattarahalli, while one gives 166 Old Madras Road, Hosabasavanapura, so confirm the address before you travel.
Put a new address on a KA-53 RC, or replace one that is lost or damaged
Record a new owner of a KA-53 car, or note or remove a car loan on its RC
Apply on Form 28 for the No Objection Certificate (NOC) a KA-53 car needs to leave the state
Renew the registration of a car on this office’s books once it turns 15
Much of this now starts online. Karnataka has offered contactless services since 1 November 2021, so check on Vahan whether your task needs a trip to Old Madras Road at all.
Autorickshaw permits and KSRTC or BMTC vehicles belong to the KA-57 office, not this one. The city keeps its two automated driving test tracks at Jnanabharathi (KA-41) and Electronic City (KA-51), so book the test on Sarathi and check where the slot is before you set off.

No official street-by-street list for KA-53 is available, so read the areas below as a guide. The office name points to KR Puram itself, and the department’s 2021-22 annual report associates this office with the Whitefield side of the city.
Worth knowing: Each of these places has an office of its own, but which office takes a particular street is not published, so check your address on Vahan or with the dealer before the papers for a new car are filed.
Each of the other Bengaluru city offices keeps its own KA code and its own records, and Devanahalli lies outside the city in Bengaluru Rural district. Use the code on your RC to pick the right card.

KR Puram collects the Karnataka lifetime tax once, at the first registration
The KA-53 office collects the Karnataka lifetime road tax, paid once when the car is first registered, at the same rate as every other office in the state. The car’s cost and whether it is electric decide the band, and a car owned by an individual pays the same rate as one owned by a company.
Electric cars registered from 1 May 2026 pay 5%, 8% or 10% depending on cost; until then those up to ₹25 lakhs were exempt
After a stay of more than 30 days in Karnataka, an outside car owes the state tax. If its registration later moves here, the share by age runs from 93% to 25%
A KA-53 car pays what a Mysuru car pays; only the insurance zone differs
On a new car the tax is inside the on-road price and paid on Vahan, as our Karnataka RTO guide explains
Fees at the KA-53 office follow the national schedule, which means Old Madras Road asks the same amount for each task as Kasturinagar does. They are paid on the Vahan portal, and on a new car the dealer settles them inside the on-road price.
For example: A KA-53 car bought on a loan pays ₹2,300 in RTO fees at registration, made up of ₹600 for the registration, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to record the loan, with road tax on top.
Once a Whitefield car turns 15, renewing its registration costs ₹5,000, rising to ₹10,000 after 20 years. Renew late and the charge mounts by ₹500 a month on a car, or by ₹300 a month on a motorcycle.
Picking a choice number adds to the bill. In the department’s 2021-22 annual report a running-series number is ₹20,000 and an advance-series number ₹75,000, and advance series may be auctioned instead.
The HSRP plate and the Karnataka road tax with its cess are paid apart from these fees.
The dealer files on Vahan, and an address in the KA-53 area brings the file to KR Puram
Buy a car anywhere in Bengaluru, and if your address falls in the KR Puram area the registration goes to this office and the car gets a KA-53 number. Where the showroom stands does not decide it.
Insurance must be in place before registration, and the choice of insurer is yours
The dealer files Form 20 on Vahan, and your address sends it to the KA-53 office
The on-road price already includes the Karnataka tax, its two cesses and the RTO fee
KR Puram allots the number and the dealer fits the High Security Registration Plate
A new two-wheeler for an address in the area also comes to KR Puram, with a ₹500 welfare cess
Want a particular KA-53 number? It costs extra, as the fees section shows
A car registered here is priced as a Bengaluru car for Own Damage cover
A used car with KA-53 on its RC is transferred by the KR Puram office, whatever part of the city the buyer lives in. The application starts on Vahan. The seller signs Form 29, seller and buyer both sign Form 30, and KR Puram charges ₹300 for a car or ₹150 for a motorcycle.
The new owner then gets 14 days to switch the policy over from the seller.
After the last instalment, send Form 35 with the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the KA-53 RC, and no RTO fee is charged. Our Karnataka RTO guide lists what to file at each stage.
For a KA-53 car, vehicle tasks begin on the Vahan portal and licence tasks on the Sarathi portal. Karnataka’s contactless services, running since 1 November 2021, put 18 Vahan and 15 Sarathi services online with no office visit.
If a KA-53 RC goes missing, apply for a duplicate on Form 26 and pay the fee in the fees table. The Kiwi Insurance RC status check shows what an RC records.
Licence applications go on Sarathi or through a Bangalore One or Karnataka One centre, and the automated tests run at Jnanabharathi and Electronic City. The Bengaluru RTO guide lists every city office.
Fines on a KA-53 car are not paid at the Old Madras Road office. Look the number up on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in the mParivahan app, where pending challans can be paid.
These come from the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended in 2019, and the full list is on our Karnataka RTO guide.
Arriving in the KA-53 area, or leaving Karnataka with a KA-53 car
A car from elsewhere in Karnataka keeps its number when its owner settles in KR Puram, and only the RC address changes. A car from another state owes Karnataka tax once it has stayed in the state for more than 30 days, and it needs a KA number once it has been kept here for more than 12 months.
The RTO named on the current RC issues the No Objection Certificate against Form 28
Settle the Karnataka tax on Vahan when the stay passes 30 days
Past the 12-month mark in Karnataka, ask KR Puram for a KA-53 registration
Have the KA-53 plate fitted, then inform your insurer that the number has changed
If you are leaving Karnataka, apply to KR Puram for the NOC on Form 28 before the move. A car that leaves may get back part of its lifetime tax under the state Act, so ask KR Puram how that refund is claimed. More on moves is in our Karnataka RTO guide.
If your job could take you to another state, ask the dealer to apply for a Bharat series (BH) number instead of KA-53, and a later move needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Form 60 comes from your employer if you work in the private sector, and that employer must have offices in at least 4 states or union territories. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.
Our Karnataka RTO guide explains eligibility and the tax a BH car pays.

The Own Damage premium depends on the zone of the office that registered the car, and KR Puram, as a Bengaluru office, is in Zone A. A KA-53 car is priced at the Zone A rate wherever its owner lives later, while Third-Party cover has one national price.
Zone A applies, as the India Motor Tariff lists Bangalore and KR Puram is a city office
The Third-Party premium is notified nationally by engine size, so compare Own Damage and optional covers
Once KR Puram moves the RC into your name, move the policy within 14 days
A move to Mysuru keeps Zone A, as the zone stays with the registering office
KR Puram registers no car without valid cover. Whenever the office records a new owner, a new address or a new number on a KA-53 RC, inform your insurer so that the policy matches it.
Third-Party cover is compulsory for every KA-53 car and bike before KR Puram will register it Done with the KR Puram paperwork? Use the two cards below to look at the Kiwi Insurance plans for a car or a bike.

Directories place it on Old Madras Road, KR Puram. Most give 345/4, Bhattarahalli (560016), and one gives 166 Old Madras Road, Hosabasavanapura (560049), so confirm the address before you go.
