KA-06 is the code of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Tumakuru, still often written Tumkur. It is one of three codes in Tumakuru district: Tiptur has KA-44 and Madhugiri has KA-64. So a car from the district does not always say KA-06.
Picture a Tumakuru plate reading KA 06 AB 1234. KA stands for Karnataka and 06 for the Tumakuru office, while AB is the series and 1234 is the four-digit number of that one car.

Worth knowing: Read 44 or 64 in place of 06 and the car was registered at Tiptur or Madhugiri, in the same district. Taking a Tumakuru car to Bengaluru, Hassan or any other part of Karnataka does not change its code. That only happens when the car is re-registered outside Karnataka, or when its registration details are changed.
New cars registered at KA-06 come with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) that the dealer fits. Since 1 April 2019, Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 has required one on every new vehicle sold.
Worth knowing: Use the booking portal named on the Karnataka Transport Department website to book the installation on an older KA-06 car, and to see the date set for it. Our Karnataka RTO guide has the plate rules for the state.
Three codes for Tumakuru district, and the Nelamangala code on the Bengaluru side
The Karnataka code list gives Tumakuru district three offices: KA-06 in Tumakuru, KA-44 in Tiptur and KA-64 in Madhugiri. Towards Bengaluru, the nearest code on the list is KA-52 for Nelamangala, which belongs to Bengaluru Rural district.
The KA-06 office on B.H. Road, and the two other offices in the district
The KA-06 office is listed on B.H. Road in Tumakuru by directories that copy the Transport Department’s contact list. The address and the hours could not be confirmed from an official source, so treat both as a guide and check them before going.
Directories give the address simply as the Regional Transport Office on B.H. Road, with the pincode 572101.
Both are separate offices with their own codes, KA-44 at Tiptur and KA-64 at Madhugiri. Their addresses and the taluks each one serves could not be confirmed, so check the office named on Vahan when you apply.
Vahan shows whether KA-06, KA-44 or KA-64 is handling your application
Duplicate RCs, address changes and transfers are applied for on Vahan before the office acts on them

Tumakuru town, the Tiptur and Madhugiri sides of the district, and Nelamangala
Your address sets the office. The district’s three offices are in Tumakuru, Tiptur and Madhugiri, and no official list says which taluk goes where, so let Vahan show the office before the dealer files.
The code on any existing RC tells you where that car was registered, and the finder at the top of this page reads a full number too.
Worth knowing: A used car bought in Tiptur with a KA-44 plate keeps that number when you bring it to Tumakuru town. Only the RC address and the owner’s name change.
The nearest offices by code are the two in the same district, Tiptur and Madhugiri. On the Bengaluru side, Nelamangala in Bengaluru Rural district has an office of its own.

Karnataka lifetime tax and cess, the same at KA-06, KA-44 and KA-64 Tumakuru cars pay the Karnataka lifetime road tax, once, at registration. The rate depends on the price, from 13% for a petrol or diesel car up to ₹5 lakhs, and the state then adds an 11% cess on the tax and a ₹1,000 cess per car.
Petrol and diesel cars above ₹5 lakhs pay 14% until the price reaches ₹10 lakhs
Above ₹10 lakhs, 17% for a car of up to ₹20 lakhs and 18% beyond
From 1 May 2026, 5% up to ₹10 lakhs, then 8%, and 10% above ₹25 lakhs. Not 4%
The 11% cess on the tax, and ₹1,000 once per car or ₹500 per two-wheeler
On a new car, the tax and cess are in the on-road price, paid on Vahan by the showroom
Whether the car is owned by an individual or a company, the percentage is the same
A car from another state owes Karnataka tax after 30 days here. Once its registration moves to Tumakuru, it pays 93% if up to 2 years old, and 25% after 15 years
All the bands are on our Karnataka RTO guide
Tumakuru, Tiptur and Madhugiri all charge the national RTO fees, so the office your address goes to makes no difference to the bill. Payment is on Vahan, and for a new car the dealer pays it along with the registration.
A Tumakuru example: For a new car on finance registered at KA-06, the RTO collects ₹2,300. Registration is ₹600, the smart card RC ₹200 and the hypothecation entry ₹1,500, and road tax with cess is separate.
A car that reaches 15 years pays ₹5,000 to renew its registration, and one past 20 years pays ₹10,000. Overdue renewals are charged by the month, ₹500 on a car and ₹300 on a motorcycle.
The dealer applies on Vahan, and one of the district’s three offices allots the number
When you buy a car in Tumakuru, the dealer registers it for you. The Vahan application carries your address, and the office for that address, KA-06, KA-44 or KA-64, approves it and gives the number.
Without valid cover the RTO will not register the car, and the insurer is your choice
It decides which of the three Tumakuru district offices handles the car
The showroom adds them to the bill and pays them on Vahan
Your district office signs off on Vahan, and the car is numbered
Number plates go on at the showroom, and you receive the RC
Check that the RC shows the code of the office for your address
Keep the insurer on the same Tumakuru district address as the RC
Bike and scooter dealers register new vehicles the same way
Selling a KA-06 car to a buyer in Karnataka leaves the number alone. The seller files Form 29, both parties sign Form 30, and ₹300 is paid on Vahan for a car.
A buyer from outside Karnataka needs the Tumakuru office to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) first. In each case the buyer gets 14 days to put the policy in their name.
The lender issues an NOC and Form 35 once you have paid the last instalment. Upload them on Vahan and the RC comes back without the loan, free. Our Karnataka RTO guide has the document list.
You can begin most KA-06 work without going to B.H. Road. Vehicle tasks start on the Vahan portal and licence tasks on the Sarathi portal, and from November 2021 Karnataka has offered some services with no office visit at all.
For a duplicate RC on a KA-06 car, apply on Form 26 through Vahan and pay ₹300. Use Kiwi Insurance to check your RC status as it moves.
Learner’s licence, test slot and renewal applications are made on Sarathi. Our Karnataka RTO guide covers each one.
Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, amended in 2019, sets one fine across India for an uninsured car, and Tumakuru follows it. A first offence costs ₹2,000 and any repeat ₹4,000.
Karnataka can compound some offences, so the challan amount is what counts. Tumakuru challans are paid on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in the mParivahan app. Our Karnataka RTO guide has more fines.
Within 12 months a car from another state needs a Tumakuru district number
A car arriving from Bengaluru or anywhere else in Karnataka keeps its KA number, and the owner changes only the RC address. A car from another state is liable for Karnataka tax after more than 30 days in the state, and once kept here for more than 12 months it has to be registered in Tumakuru district.
Apply on Form 28 to the RTO that issued the old number
Apply at the Tumakuru district office for your address within 12 months
The older the car, the smaller the share of lifetime tax you pay
Fit the new plates and collect the RC for the Tumakuru number
If you are leaving Karnataka with a KA-06 car, work through the steps backwards. Tumakuru issues the NOC on Form 28, the other state registers the car, and a refund of part of the Karnataka tax can be claimed.
Worth knowing: Inform your insurer of the Tumakuru address first and of the new number when it comes. For the refund itself, ask the KA-06 office.
On a posting that could take you out of Karnataka? A Bharat series (BH) number has no state code, so that later move needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC) and no new registration. Government, defence and public sector staff are eligible, and private employees whose firm has offices in 4 or more states or union territories apply with Form 60.
The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car. BH tax is due every 2 years, 8% on a car under ₹10 lakhs. Our Karnataka RTO guide goes further into BH rules.
National forms for the three Tumakuru district offices
Learner’s licence, driving licence, renewal or changed details for a Tumakuru driver
Download PDFA form goes to the office whose code is printed on your RC. The rest are listed on the Parivahan Sewa website.
The registering office sets the price zone for Own Damage cover, and the Tumakuru offices are in Zone B. Bengaluru is Karnataka’s only Zone A city in the India Motor Tariff, so a car registered in Tumakuru usually has a lower Own Damage premium than one registered there. The Third-Party price is the same across India.
Tumakuru is Zone B for Own Damage, unlike Bengaluru, so the premium on a KA-06 car is usually lower
Third-Party cover is priced by engine size, so a KA-06 car pays the national rate
KA-44 and KA-64 are Zone B as well, so all three district codes price the same way
A car still on a Bengaluru number keeps its Zone A rating until it is registered in Tumakuru
KA-06 will not register a car until a valid policy is in place
A new owner moves the policy across within 14 days of the RC transfer
Inform your insurer of the Tumakuru number after re-registration
Before a KA-06 car is registered or driven, it needs Third-Party cover at the very least Match the policy to what the RC says about the car and you. Pick a Kiwi Insurance plan below for a KA-06 car or bike.
