Indore RTO at a glance

Indore RTO at a glance

Indore district registers its cars under MP-09 at a single Regional Transport Office (RTO). Directories place that office at Nayta Mundla, out by the bypass. What trips people up is the district line, with Pithampur in Dhar district and Dewas and Ujjain on codes of their own.

How to read an Indore (MP-09) number plate

How to read an Indore (MP-09) number plate

Look for 09 straight after MP. A plate such as MP 09 AB 1234 was issued in Indore, with AB as its series and 1234 as the four-digit number that belongs to that car alone.

Number plate MP 09 AB 1234 labelled: MP is the state code for Madhya Pradesh, 09 is the Indore RTO code, AB is the series and 1234 is the four-digit number

Worth knowing: Your MP-09 does not change when you move house to Dewas, Bhopal or any other Madhya Pradesh district. It changes only if the car is re-registered outside Madhya Pradesh or its registration details are changed, so a used MP-09 car bought in Ujjain still shows Indore as its first office.

HSRP number plates in Indore

HSRP number plates in Indore

Since 1 April 2019, Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 has made the dealer responsible for fitting High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), so an MP-09 car bought new in Indore already has them.

Worth knowing: Indore owners with a car from before that date book the HSRP installation through the booking portal named on the Madhya Pradesh transport department website. The date for older vehicles is given there, and the rest is on our Madhya Pradesh RTO guide.

One office for the district, listed at Nayta Mundla

Indore has no second registering office, so every MP-09 file goes to the same place. That place is listed, not officially confirmed, at Nayta Mundla, the area of the Nayta Mundla bus terminal and bypass.

Both directories that cover MP-09 name Nayta Mundla, and one of them adds the pincode 452020. A state bus route list from May 2026 shows the Nayta Mundla ISBT and bypass there, though it does not mention the RTO itself.

Which areas come under Indore RTO

Which areas come under Indore RTO

Indore district, Mhow included, and the places just over the line

No official list of the areas MP-09 covers is available, so the address on your RC decides the office, and anywhere in Indore district means MP-09. Mhow, which state notices now call Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, lies inside the district, and the Vahan list has no separate office for it. Pithampur is a different story, as it falls in Dhar district.

Transferring car ownership in Indore

Transferring car ownership in Indore

An MP-09 car sold to a buyer anywhere in Madhya Pradesh keeps its number. Form 29 comes from the seller, Form 30 carries both signatures, and Vahan takes the ₹300 transfer fee for a car.

Selling to someone in Gujarat or Maharashtra means a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indore RTO first. Whoever buys has 14 days after the transfer to get the insurance changed to their name.

Clearing a loan (hypothecation) from an Indore RC

Loan paid off? Collect the bank’s NOC and Form 35, upload them on Vahan, and the MP-09 office removes the hypothecation at no charge, with the documents listed on our Madhya Pradesh RTO guide.

Moving your car to Indore

Moving your car to Indore

A car from outside the state needs an MP-09 number after 12 months here

Coming from another Madhya Pradesh district, you simply change the RC address. Coming from another state, the car needs an MP-09 number once it has been kept here for more than 12 months, and Madhya Pradesh charges a part of the lifetime tax that shrinks with the car’s age.

Re-registering a car from another state in Indore

  1. 1

    NOC from home

The RTO back home issues it on Form 28

  2. 2

    File with MP-09

Once 12 months have passed here, apply in Indore with the NOC, RC, policy and PUC

  3. 3

    Tax by age

Between its first and second birthday, a car owes 86% of its full lifetime tax

  4. 4

    Swap the plates

Your MP-09 plates are fitted and the new RC is issued

An Indore example: A car bought elsewhere for a standard price of ₹9 lakh, now 18 months old, would owe 8% of ₹9 lakh, times 86%, which is ₹61,920. Vahan confirms the amount.

If you are leaving Madhya Pradesh, the same steps apply in reverse, with the Indore RTO issuing an NOC on Form 28 before the new state registers the car. Inform your insurer when the address and the number change.

BH series registration in Indore

BH series registration in Indore

The Bharat series (BH) suits Indore residents who change states for work. A BH plate has no state code, so moving away needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC) and no fresh registration. Government, defence and public sector employees qualify, as do private staff of firms with offices in 4 or more states or union territories, through Form 60.

The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car. For a car under ₹10 lakhs the BH tax is 8%, paid in two-year blocks, as our Madhya Pradesh RTO guide shows.
