One code, two offices: Pune-1 near Sangam Bridge and Pune-2 on Alandi Road, Yerwada, and how MH-12 differs from Pimpri Chinchwad (MH-14) and Baramati (MH-42)

Pune city registers vehicles under a single code, MH-12, but its Regional Transport Office (RTO) works from two addresses: Pune-1 near Sangam Bridge and Pune-2 on Alandi Road in Yerwada. Pimpri Chinchwad (MH-14) and Baramati (MH-42) share the district with Pune yet issue codes of their own.
Take MH 12 AB 1234 apart from the left. MH is the Maharashtra state code, 12 is the Pune RTO, AB is the letter series and 1234 is the four-digit number given to one vehicle within that series.

Worth knowing: Whether the paperwork went through Sangam Bridge or Yerwada, the plate reads MH-12, as both offices share the code. A Pune car still shows MH-12 after its owner settles in Nagpur or Nashik, and the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Maharashtra or its registration details are changed.
Any car first registered at MH-12 from 1 April 2019 left the dealer with its High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) in place, and the Maharashtra transport department says such a vehicle need not apply again.
Worth knowing: For an older Pune car, book the installation through the portal named on the Maharashtra transport department website, which also shows the date for your vehicle. Fitting at a fitment centre adds no charge, while fitting at home costs extra. For the complete HSRP rules, read our Maharashtra RTO guide.
MH-12, and the Pune district and border codes that are not MH-12
Pune district has three registration codes. MH-12 belongs to the Pune RTO and its two city offices, MH-14 to the separate Pimpri Chinchwad office at Moshi, and MH-42 to Baramati, a Deputy RTO that reports to Pune.
Yerwada is not a fourth code. The department lists the Alandi Road office as Pune-2 under MH-12, so a car registered there carries the same prefix as one from Sangam Bridge.
Official addresses of Pune-1 and Pune-2, and what each one is listed for
The Maharashtra transport department lists two offices under MH-12, and both appear below with the address it gives. Neither office’s opening hours could be confirmed from an official source, so check with the office before you go.
Pune-1 is the Regional Transport Office on Dr. Ambedkar Road, beside Sangam Bridge. No official list of the areas it serves has been published, so read the area table further down as a guide rather than a rule.
Pune-2 stands on Alandi Road in Yerwada. The department’s list labels it for vehicle conversion and modification and does not say which other services it takes, so check what can be done there before making the trip.
Worth knowing: The Pune RTO also oversees the Baramati Deputy RTO (MH-42), and the department places no other Deputy RTO and no border check post under it. Pimpri Chinchwad is outside this set, with an office of its own at Moshi.
In numbers: The Pune RTO had 50,84,403 vehicles on its records on 31 March 2025, of them 8,46,426 cars, and it registered 3,04,368 new vehicles in 2024-25, more than any other office in the Pune area.

Pune city, the talukas around it, and the places that belong to MH-14 or MH-42 instead
The address on the Registration Certificate (RC) picks your office, not the showroom. No official area list exists for MH-12, MH-14 or MH-42, so the table follows one directory and is a starting point only.
Worth knowing: A Pune district address does not by itself mean MH-12. The same directory puts Hinjawadi and the Maval and Khed talukas with the Moshi office, so a new car registered from there would usually get MH-14; confirm with the office before you rely on it.
Type any registration number into the finder at the top of this page to see which office issued it. The office it names keeps that vehicle’s file.
Moved house inside Maharashtra? Get the RC updated with the new address and inform your insurer afterwards, while the MH-12 number itself is left untouched.
Five districts border Pune district: Ahilyanagar, Solapur, Satara, Raigad and Thane, and every one runs its own office. Inside the district, Pimpri Chinchwad and Baramati issue their own codes as well, so the owner’s address, not the closest office, decides where a car is registered.

The Maharashtra rate, paid once, the same at Sangam Bridge and Yerwada No separate Pune levy exists, so an MH-12 car pays the Maharashtra one-time tax when it is first registered, calculated on its cost, its fuel and whether a person or a company owns it.
Individual owners pay 11% on a car up to ₹10 lakhs, 12% between ₹10 lakhs and ₹20 lakhs, then 13% for anything dearer
Two points above petrol in each price band, so 13%, 14% and 15% for a diesel car in an individual’s name
A CNG or LPG car is taxed 8%, 9% and 10% across the same bands, one point higher than before the 2025 change
For example: An individual registering a ₹6 lakh petrol car in Pune pays 11%, or ₹66,000. A road safety cess is charged on top of the tax, reported as 2%, so check the final amount on Vahan.
An electric vehicle (EV) registered in Maharashtra from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2030 pays no motor vehicle tax under the state EV policy
The 2025 change also raised the maximum tax from ₹20 lakhs to ₹30 lakhs, reported to apply from 1 July 2025
An individual pays 10% on a two-wheeler up to 99 cc, 11% from 100 to 299 cc and 12% from 300 cc
Check the amount Vahan shows before you pay. The full band table is on our Maharashtra RTO guide
Each RTO fee below is a national amount, so the MH-12 counter at Sangam Bridge charges exactly what the Moshi office charges a Pimpri Chinchwad owner. The money is paid on the Vahan portal, and when the car is new, the dealer pays it and adds it to the on-road price.
For example: Finance a new car with a Pune address and the RTO fees come to ₹2,300 before road tax, made of ₹600 for registration, ₹200 for the smart card RC and ₹1,500 to record the hypothecation.
At 15 years an MH-12 car’s registration is renewed for ₹5,000, and past 20 years the charge is ₹10,000. A renewal that runs late adds ₹500 for every month on a car and ₹300 on a motorcycle.
This table leaves out three separate costs, namely the HSRP, the Maharashtra road tax and any state service charge.
The dealer files on Vahan, and your address decides between MH-12, MH-14 and MH-42
Your home address, not the showroom, decides which office signs off a new car that the dealer registers on Vahan. That is how a Pune city buyer ends up with MH-12 even after shopping at a Pimpri Chinchwad dealer.
Third-Party cover at the least has to exist before the dealer applies, and the choice of insurer is yours alone
Your address proof goes with the application, and a Pune city address sends it to the MH-12 office
Road tax and the RTO fee are part of the on-road price and appear as lines on the dealer’s invoice
When the Pune RTO approves the application, the car is given its MH-12 registration number
The dealer fits the High Security Registration Plate, and the RC follows from the office
An address in Pimpri Chinchwad or Baramati usually goes to that office instead, wherever the car was bought
Pune is a Zone A city in the motor tariff, so the Own Damage part of a first policy costs more than in most Maharashtra towns
A new two-wheeler takes the same route, through the dealer and the office for the owner’s address
Sell a used MH-12 car and the transfer goes through the Pune office on its RC or the Vahan portal. The seller files Form 29, buyer and seller both sign Form 30, and the fee is ₹300 for a car or ₹150 for a motorcycle.
The buyer then gets 14 days from the transfer to have the policy put in their own name.
When the loan is repaid, upload the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) with Form 35 on Vahan to get an RC without the bank’s name, at no fee. Our Maharashtra RTO guide names the papers needed at each step.
For a Pune vehicle, start on the Vahan portal, and for a licence on the Sarathi portal; the application then reaches the MH-12 office for your RC address. The learner licence test in Maharashtra is taken online with Aadhaar authentication, so that step needs no visit to Sangam Bridge.
If an MH-12 RC is lost, stolen or damaged, apply for a duplicate on Form 26 and pay the fee in the fees table. The Kiwi Insurance RC status check shows the status of any MH number.
Book licence work and test slots on Sarathi; the driving test itself is taken in person at the office for your address. The Maharashtra RTO guide covers each other online service open to MH-12 owners.
Pune challans are checked and paid online. Enter the MH-12 number on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or in mParivahan, and each challan shows the amount due for the offence.
The rest of the fines are listed on our Maharashtra RTO guide.
Your next step hangs on which state issued the plate you have now
A car from Nashik, Nagpur or any other MH office needs only a new address on its RC after a move to Pune. One from another state needs a Maharashtra number once it has been kept here for more than 12 months.
Before you leave, ask the RTO that registered the car for its No Objection Certificate on Form 28
After more than 12 months in Maharashtra, apply to the Pune office for your address for an MH number
Maharashtra tax and the road safety cess are charged, so check the exact amount on Vahan
Once the MH-12 number is issued, inform your insurer so the policy matches the new RC
If you are leaving Maharashtra with a Pune car, the same steps apply in reverse: Get the NOC on Form 28 from the MH-12 office, then register the car in the new state. The RTO charges no fee for that NOC.
Worth knowing: Our Maharashtra RTO guide goes through these steps for owners anywhere in the state.
A Pune buyer whose job could mean a posting in another state can ask the dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number instead of MH-12. A posting from Pune to Hyderabad then needs no NOC and no new registration.
A private sector employee needs Form 60 from an employer with offices in 4 or more states or union territories, and gives it to the Pune dealer. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.

What decides the Own Damage premium is the zone of the registering office, and the owner’s home address plays no part. Pune is one of the eight Zone A cities in the India Motor Tariff, and Mumbai is the only other one in Maharashtra, so an MH-12 car pays the higher Zone A rate. Third-Party cover, by contrast, carries a single national price.
Pune is in Zone A, so a car registered at Sangam Bridge or Yerwada pays more for Own Damage cover than one from Satara or Solapur
Whether insurers rate an MH-14 car as Zone A is not settled, so Pimpri Chinchwad owners should confirm the zone with their insurer
Compare plans on the Own Damage part and optional covers, as the Third-Party premium is the same in every city
Shortlist plans only after seeing which cashless partner garages your part of Pune has
The dealer needs a valid policy before the Pune RTO registers the car. When an MH-12 car is sold, the RC moves first and the buyer then has 14 days to move the policy. After a new number or a change of address, inform your insurer so the policy matches the RC.
Worth knowing: A Baramati (MH-42) car stays in Zone B after its owner moves to Pune, as the zone follows the office that registered it, not the new address.
Both Pune offices check for at least Third-Party cover, and no vehicle in India may be driven without it Once the MH-12 paperwork is done, pick the cover for your vehicle. The two cards below lead to Kiwi Insurance plans for cars and for bikes.

Pune city uses MH-12, issued by the Pune Regional Transport Office from its two offices, Pune-1 near Sangam Bridge and Pune-2 on Alandi Road, Yerwada. Pimpri Chinchwad (MH-14) and Baramati (MH-42) are separate codes in the same district.
