Chhattisgarh RTOs, 27 regional and district offices in all, are run by the state Transport Department. To find the office behind a Chhattisgarh number, read the two digits after CG: They are the code of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or district office that registered the vehicle.
To read a CG number plate, take it in four parts. Take CG 04 AB 1234: CG means Chhattisgarh, 04 means the Raipur RTO, AB is the letter series and 1234 is the four-digit number.

The CG-04 code does not change when the owner moves to another district of Chhattisgarh, so a move from Raipur to Bilaspur needs only an address update on the Registration Certificate (RC). The car gets a different code only if it is registered again outside the state or its registration details are changed.
Worth knowing: To check the office behind any CG number, type the full number into the RTO finder at the top of this page.
To keep a CG vehicle legal on the road, make sure it has a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP), which Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 requires on every vehicle. A car bought new since 1 April 2019 already has one from the dealer.
The plates were made compulsory by G.S.R. 1162(E), 4 December 2018, and S.O. 6052, 6 December 2018, from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
Nothing to book for a vehicle sold since 1 April 2019, as the manufacturer and dealer fit the plates
Book the plate for a vehicle registered before 1 April 2019 and get it fitted by the date Chhattisgarh sets
Look for the chromium-based hologram, the laser-etched identification number and the snap locks, which cannot be removed or reused
Fix the third registration mark on the windscreen. Petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG) cars take a light blue one, diesel cars an orange one
Worth knowing: To book a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) installation, use the booking portal that the Chhattisgarh transport department website names, and look up the date for your CG vehicle on the same site.
Every CG code on the Transport Department office list, in code order
The Chhattisgarh Transport Department lists 27 offices with codes from CG-04 for Raipur to CG-30 for Balarampur. Four are RTOs, at Raipur, Bilaspur, Ambikapur and Jagdalpur, two are ARTO offices, at Durg and Rajnandgaon, and 21 are District Transport Offices.
To spot a new or moved office, check the Chhattisgarh Transport Department office list, which these tables follow.
To visit the Raipur RTO (CG-04), go to Rawabata, near Banjari Mandir, Bhanpuri, in Raipur. It is one of the four full RTOs in Chhattisgarh, with Bilaspur (CG-10), Ambikapur (CG-15) and Jagdalpur (CG-17).
Before you go, check the code on your Registration Certificate (RC). Dhamtari (CG-05), Mahasamund (CG-06), Balodabazar (CG-22), Gariyaband (CG-23) and Bemetara (CG-25) register vehicles for their own districts, so an address there belongs to that office, not to Raipur.
To find your office by city, match the town on your RC with a card below: Bilaspur is CG-10, Durg is CG-07 and Korba is CG-12. For a district not shown, use the full code list above.

Town offices with their own CG code and address
To deal with one of these town offices, use its own code and address below. Each handles registration, driving licences and lifetime tax for its district.
Bilaspur RTO has the code CG-10 and is on Sipat Road, near the Traffic Park, at Gram Lagra in Bilaspur.
Durg has the code CG-07 and is listed as an ARTO office. It is on Jail Road in Durg, and Rajnandgaon (CG-08) is the other ARTO office in the state.
Korba has the code CG-12 and is a District Transport Office, near the Tehsil office at Rampur in Korba.
To check a car registered next door, open the guide for that state below. Chhattisgarh borders seven states: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Budget for lifetime tax when you first register a vehicle in Chhattisgarh. It is paid once, as a percentage of the vehicle’s cost. A new car is reported to pay 8% if it costs up to ₹5 lakhs and 9% if it costs more, and a new two-wheeler 5%. Other published summaries give 5% and 6% for cars, split at the same ₹5 lakhs, so confirm the rate on Vahan or with the Transport Commissioner before paying.
Multiply the cost by the rate. For a car priced at ₹4.5 lakhs, 8% comes to ₹36,000, and for one priced at ₹8 lakhs, 9% comes to ₹72,000. At the lower published rates of 5% and 6%, the same two cars would pay ₹22,500 and ₹48,000.
A new motorcycle or scooter is reported to pay lifetime tax of 5% of its cost. On a ₹90,000 motorcycle, that comes to ₹4,500.
The state halved lifetime tax for vehicles bought during its Auto Expo from 20 January to 5 February 2026
Look up the Vahan amount for an electric or hybrid model before buying, since no rate for them is shown here yet
Re-register a car from another state once it has spent 12 months in Chhattisgarh, and pay the state’s tax then
A new private vehicle registered against a certificate for scrapping an old one gets 25% off the tax
Pay the tax and the registration fee on Vahan, or let the dealer pay them as part of a new car’s price
Before paying, compare the amount on Vahan with these rates, as the state can revise them.
To register a new private car at a Chhattisgarh RTO, pay ₹600, or ₹300 for a motorcycle. Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 sets these fees for every state.
Add ₹500 for each month a car renewal is late, or ₹300 for a motorcycle. Battery-operated vehicles are exempt from the fee to issue or renew an RC.
Keep in mind: Budget separately for Chhattisgarh lifetime tax, the HSRP and any state service charge, as none of them is part of these fees.
To register a new car in Chhattisgarh, let the dealer apply on the Vahan portal, as most new private cars never need to visit the RTO. Pay the lifetime tax and the registration fee with the car’s price, and expect the Registration Certificate (RC) after the RTO approves the file.
Buy at least Third-Party cover before registration, though most owners choose comprehensive
Give address proof and a PAN card or Form 60, and the dealer files Form 20, Form 21 and Form 22
Pay the lifetime tax, reported at 8% or 9% of the car’s cost, plus the ₹600 registration fee
Once the RTO approves the file and allots your CG number, the dealer fits the HSRP
Look out for the smart card RC, which is posted to the address on the application
Important to know: Choose your own insurer if you prefer, since the dealer needs only proof of a valid policy to register the car.
To transfer a used CG car, the seller files Form 29, both of you sign Form 30, and the ₹300 fee is paid on Vahan or at the RTO on the RC, such as CG-07 Durg.
Have the seller sign Form 29, the notice of sale for the CG office
Sign Form 30 as buyer and seller, asking the RTO for an RC in the new owner’s name
Bring the original RC and policy, plus a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate and an address proof for the buyer
Pay the ₹300 car transfer fee and send the file through Vahan or to the CG office named on the RC
Apply to the insurer within 14 days to put the policy in the buyer’s name
To clear a loan from the RC, wait for the last instalment, then collect the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) and Form 35. Upload both on Vahan, and the RTO issues a fresh RC without the lender. Form 34 does the opposite job and adds a loan to the RC.
To handle most RTO work from home in Chhattisgarh, use the Vahan portal for vehicles and the Sarathi portal for driving licences, both in version 4.0. Visit the RTO only for steps such as the driving test.
Apply on Sarathi, upload the documents and pay the fee without visiting the office
Pick a test date at your CG office for the permanent licence
Pay Chhattisgarh lifetime tax and RTO fees on Vahan
Start a transfer, an RC address change or a duplicate RC on Vahan
Type any CG number into Parivahan Sewa or mParivahan and check the RTO, the insurance and the Pollution Under Control (PUC) status
To replace a lost, stolen or damaged RC, apply with Form 26 and pay ₹300 for a car. To see the current record of a CG number, use Parivahan Sewa or mParivahan, or check your RC status with Kiwi Insurance.
Use Sarathi for a learner’s licence, a driving test slot, a licence renewal or an International Driving Permit. Take the test itself at your RTO.
To avoid the most common fine for a car owner in Chhattisgarh, keep the policy valid. Without one, the fine is ₹2,000 the first time and ₹4,000 for a repeat, under section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended in 2019.
Read the table as the national amounts from the 2019 amendment. Some offences are compounded by Chhattisgarh at different amounts, so pay the amount printed on your challan.
Paying an e-challan: Enter the CG number on echallan.parivahan.gov.in, the Parivahan e-challan portal, or open mParivahan, to see and pay any pending challan.
Plan to re-register a car from another state once it has been in Chhattisgarh for more than 12 months. Pay Chhattisgarh lifetime tax when it gets its CG number, and ask your old state for a refund of any unused tax.
Apply to your old RTO on Form 28 and collect the No Objection Certificate (NOC)
Hand in the NOC, RC, policy and a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate at the office for your address
Pay the Chhattisgarh lifetime tax that the RTO calculates for your car
Get new plates with the CG number fitted as soon as it is allotted
Inform your insurer so the policy shows the CG number and your new address
If you are leaving Chhattisgarh, work through the same steps in reverse. Get the NOC from your CG office before you go, register the car in the new state, then claim back any unused Chhattisgarh lifetime tax.
A Bharat series (BH) number plate is a national registration with no state code on it. A car registered in Chhattisgarh under BH needs no No Objection Certificate (NOC) and no new number when its owner moves to another state. Consider it if your job moves you between states. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) introduced it in G.S.R. 594(E) of 26 August 2021, and it applies from 15 September 2021.
The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car
Apply if you work in central or state government service, the defence forces or a public sector undertaking
Ask your employer for Form 60 if the company works from offices in at least 4 states or union territories
To sell a BH car or convert an existing CG registration, rely on G.S.R. 879(E) of 14 December 2022, which allowed both
Move to another state without a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or re-registration, and with no tax refund to claim
Add 2% for a diesel car or take off 2% for an electric one, and pay the BH tax every 2 years. Compare it with Chhattisgarh’s own lifetime tax, reported as 8% or 9% of the car’s cost and paid once at registration.

Before you submit: Send each form to the office whose code is on your RC, such as CG-04 Raipur or CG-07 Durg. Check the document list for your service on the Parivahan Sewa website, as some need address proof or a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. For anything not listed here, open all RTO forms on the Parivahan Sewa website.
To see how your RTO affects the premium, check its zone. Every Chhattisgarh office, Raipur included, is in Zone B for the Own Damage part, while the Third-Party price is the same national rate in every zone.
Chhattisgarh comes under Zone B for Own Damage insurance, which usually means a lower premium than in Zone A cities like Hyderabad
Expect the same zone for a CG-04, CG-10 or CG-07 car, as all three cities are Zone B
Pay the same notified Third-Party rate whether your car is from Raipur or from Sukma
Transfer the RC at the RTO, then ask the insurer to move the policy within 14 days
File Form 33 for the new RC address and inform your insurer, and the CG code on the plate stays the same
Buy the policy first, since the RTO allots a CG number only to an insured car
Move the policy to the buyer within 14 days of the transfer, alongside the RC
Inform your insurer of the new number once the car is re-registered
Third-Party insurance is required by law before any vehicle in India is registered or driven, so keep the policy with your RTO documents With the CG registration in your name, put the policy in your name too. See the car and bike plans from Kiwi Insurance through the links below.
