Baramati RTO at a glance

Baramati RTO at a glance

Baramati has a Deputy Regional Transport Office (Deputy RTO) of its own, code MH-42, at the MIDC Circle on Bhigwan Road. It is the one Deputy RTO the department places under the Pune RTO, yet it issues its own code rather than Pune’s MH-12.

How to read a Baramati (MH-42) number plate

How to read a Baramati (MH-42) number plate

Look at MH 42 AB 1234 one block at a time. MH is the state code for Maharashtra, 42 is the Baramati Deputy RTO, AB is the letter series and 1234 is the four-digit number that tells one vehicle from the rest of its series.

Number plate MH 42 AB 1234 labelled: MH is the state code for Maharashtra, 42 is the Baramati RTO code, AB is the series and 1234 is the four-digit number

Worth knowing: MH-42 is not a Pune plate, even though the Baramati office reports to the Pune RTO. A car registered here keeps MH-42 if its owner later lives in Pune or Solapur, and the code changes only if the car is re-registered outside Maharashtra or its registration details are changed.

HSRP number plates in Baramati

HSRP number plates in Baramati

Baramati cars registered on or after 1 April 2019 were handed over with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) already on them, and the Maharashtra transport department confirms that such owners do not need to apply again.

Worth knowing: An older MH-42 car can be booked in through the portal named on the Maharashtra transport department website, where the due date for each vehicle is shown. Centres fit the plate with no extra fitment charge, and fitting at your home costs more. Our Maharashtra RTO guide gives the state-wide plate rules.

MH-42, its parent code MH-12, and the codes just over the district line

MH-42 is the only code Baramati issues. People mix it up with MH-12, the code of its parent office in Pune, and with MH-45, which belongs to Akluj, an office for another part of Solapur district across the border.

Akluj is a Deputy RTO under the Solapur RTO, in Malshiras taluka, so an MH-45 plate was issued in Solapur district and not at Baramati.

The official address, what kind of office it is, and how it relates to Pune

Baramati’s office is the Deputy RTO at Vidya Nagari Corner by the MIDC Circle, and the regional offices page, the 2026 address list and the organisation chart all describe it the same way. Opening hours for the Bhigwan Road office could not be confirmed from an official source, so check with the office before you set out.

Baramati Deputy RTO, MH-42

On the organisation chart the office comes under the Pune RTO, but it issues a code of its own, so an MH-42 registration is made at Bhigwan Road and not at Sangam Bridge.

Put any registration number into the finder at the top of this page and it returns the issuing office, which is where that vehicle’s records are kept.

Changing homes within Maharashtra leaves the MH-42 number untouched, though the RC needs the new address and your insurer needs to be informed.

An MH-42 car of 15 pays ₹5,000 when its registration is renewed, and a car older than 20 pays ₹10,000. Late renewals cost ₹500 extra per month for cars and ₹300 per month for motorcycles.

Registering a new car in Baramati

Registering a new car in Baramati

Filed by the dealer on Vahan, approved at the office for your address

In Baramati, as anywhere in Maharashtra, the dealer registers a new car on Vahan and the office for the buyer’s address approves it. A buyer from Daund or Indapur who shops in Pune should still expect MH-42 if, as the directory says, those talukas come under Baramati.

  1. 1

    Get cover in place

Have a valid Third-Party policy before the dealer applies, from an insurer you choose

  2. 2

    Vahan application

The dealer submits it with your address proof, and an MH-42 address sends it to Bhigwan Road

  3. 3

    Tax inside the price

Road tax and the registration fee are billed in the on-road price, line by line

  4. 4

    MH-42 number given

Once Baramati approves, the vehicle is allotted its MH-42 number

  5. 5

    Plate and RC follow

Bhigwan Road issues the RC after the dealer puts on the High Security Registration Plate

  • Address, not showroom

Buying in Pune city does not give you MH-12 if you live in an MH-42 taluka

  • Zone B premium

Baramati registrations are rated in Zone B, so Own Damage cover usually costs less than for a Pune car

  • Two-wheelers too

Scooters and motorcycles are registered through the dealer at the same office

Transferring car ownership in Baramati

Transferring car ownership in Baramati

To sell an MH-42 car, transfer it at the Baramati office or on the Vahan portal. The paperwork is Form 29 from the seller and Form 30 with both signatures, and Baramati charges ₹300 per car or ₹150 per motorcycle.

Insurance has its own deadline. Counting from the transfer, the new owner of a Baramati car is allowed 14 days to move the policy across.

Removing a loan (hypothecation) from a Baramati RC

After the final instalment, send Form 35 and the lender’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) through Vahan, and the RC is reissued without the lender, with no fee to pay. Each document needed is set out in our Maharashtra RTO guide.

Worth knowing: Our Maharashtra RTO guide has the forms for every step.

BH series registration in Baramati

BH series registration in Baramati

Someone in Baramati who expects to be posted outside Maharashtra can ask the dealer for a Bharat series (BH) number rather than MH-42. Moving the car to another state later then needs no NOC and no re-registration.

A private company employee qualifies when the company works from 4 or more states or union territories and signs Form 60 for the Baramati dealer. The format is YY BH #### XX, where YY is the year of first registration, the four digits are allotted at random, and XX represents the alphabetic series, which can be a single letter or two letters. It is black on a white plate, like any other private car.

Your Own Damage premium depends on the zone of the registering office. Baramati is in Zone B: The tariff’s Zone A list names Pune and Mumbai, not Baramati, so an MH-42 car is usually cheaper to cover for Own Damage than an MH-12 car, even though the office reports to Pune.

  • Zone B for MH-42
